SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 671,059, dated April 2, 1901. Application filed February 14, 1900. Serial No. 5,172. (No model- To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD GOLLIDY SAN- DERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Overalls, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to overalls; and the object f the same is to provide a simple and effective means of padding or cushioning the knee portions of the legs to alord ease and comfort to the wearer while in a kneeling posture, the degree of padding or cushioning being removable and replaceable in whole or in part to accommodate various uses and also to reinforce the padding device and the portions of the legs and body of the overalls above the same and have said reinforce serve as the outer faces of the front pockets.

The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pair of overalls embodying the features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a section on Fig. 3 is a similar section showing the padding attachment distended by a cushion-filling.

Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

The numeral l designates the upper body of the overalls, which is provided with longitudinally-extending reinforced strips 2, secured at the opposite side edges 3 to the material of the overalls beneath and having the upper terminals 4: unsecured to provide mouths for pockets 5, which are defined bya transverse stitching 6, and thereby Wholly located exteriorly of the material of the overalls over which the said reinforces extend to avoid cutting such material and provide a convenient means of forming the pockets. The reinforces 2 will be of the same material as that from which the overalls are constructed, and a similar thickness of like material will thus bound the front and rear portions of the pockets, and thereby make them stronger and capable of withstanding greater wear and tear. The said reinforce-strips 2 extend downwardly over the knees of t'ne legs 7, and secured to their lower extremities are `forced strips 2, and the lower extremities of the saine, as well as the reinforced strips, are secured by lines of stitches lO, which extend around the same to vertical lines of bindingstitches 1l to thereby form a lower central permanent opening 12, which gives access to the pocket formed between the reinforcestrips 2 beneath the quilted lengths and the adjacent portions of the legs 7.

For some kinds of work the quilted lengths S can be used alone and serve as means for preventing injury to the knees of the wearer of the overalls while in a kneeling posture and also avoid the tiresome and ofttimes painful sensation resulting from a long continuance of such position without interposed pads or other devices. In most instances, however, it will be better to insert a filling 13, as shown by Fig. 3, within the pocket formed beneath the quilting and provide k nee-pads which may be increased or diminished at will by reason of the provision of the permanent opening l2. The said opening permits the insertion or withdrawal of the filling 13 to and from the pocket beneath the quilted lengths and the reinforce-strips, and said quilting is thus prevented from becoming matted and can be replaced by new lling material at any time or entirely removed to permit the overalls to be cleansed by washing and which has been a great disadvantage in similar devices as heretofore constructed and wherein the filling was permanently inclosed and if removed required the disconnection of the parts forming the pockets and after attachment. It will also be observed that the strain or pull exerted on the overalls above the knees when the wearer is in a kneeling position is distributed over a great length of the overalls and taken up by the reinforced strips 2, thereby removing the strain directly from the overalls themselves and rendering them more strong and durable. It is also proposed to make the quilted lengths of material with an outer hard wearing-surface, or in the event that more than one thickness is used the outer layer may' be of hard or tough material and the inner layer or layers of a softer nature.

The permanent opening 12 will be formed large enough to permit the insertion or Withdrawal of the filling 13, but also prevent the accidental working out therethrough of the said filling and which will result from the position of the opening at the lower central portion of the quilted lengths andreinforce-strips.

It is obviously apparent that changes in the size, form, proportions, and minor details may be resorted to without in the least departing` from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new isl. A pair of overalls having strips of material over the knee-portions of the legs thereof completely exterior of the fabric of which said portions of the overalls are formed and secured by lines of stitches at the sides and transversely at points immediately above and below the said knee portions to form pockets of which the said fabric of the overalls provides the inner walls, a length of quilted material applied to the exterior surface of each strip and secured only by the lines of stitches for forming the pockets in said strips to reduce outer surface wear on the pockets, each pocket having a reduced entrance which is permanently open, and provided for the removable reception of padding, the reduced dimension of the entrance preventing the padding from accidentally slipping out.

2. A pair of overalls having distinctly-defined pockets over the knee portions exclusively having reduced entrances which are permanently open for the introduction and removal of paddingr material.

3. A pair of overalls having distinctly-deined applied pockets over the knee portions of the material of which the overalls is made up, said pockets having` reduced entrances which `remain permanently open for the introduction and removal of padding material, andquilted reinforces coeXtensive exclusively with the pockets and secured over the exteriorof the latter to resist wear on the pockets.
