J. .H. JESSBN.
STOCKING.
Patented Nov. 3, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB H. JESSEN, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
STOCKING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,807, dated'November 3, 1896.
Application filed July 31, 1896. Serial No. 601,241. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB H. JESSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stockings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in stockings, the object of the same being to provide a stocking especially adapted for use by people with tender feet, a further object of the same being to relieve the pressure of the shoe from the toes and thereby prevent the formation of corns and other excrescences.
The invention consists of a stocking having a double thickness of material at the upper side of the toe portion thereof, the inner ply being provided with a series of openings or perforations and the outer layer having an enlarged opening into which the hand may be passed for the purpose of inserting pieces of raw cotton for protecting the toes from abrasion.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my device, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section through the same.
My improved stocking may be knit, woven, or otherwise constructed, with the upper surface of the toe portion thereof formed of two layers of material, 1 and 2, with the inner layer 2 having a series of perforations or. openings 3 3 therein, the same being so located that when the stocking is in place upon the foot of the wearer they will lie directly above the toes of the foot. The outer layer 1 has an enlarged opening 4 in it, just in the rear of the opening 3, large enough to permit the passage of the hand therethrough for the purpose of inserting pieces of raw cotton or other similar material to protect the toes from abrasion. These twolayers are formed during the process of knitting or weaving the fabric of the stocking.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the entire foot, including the toes,
will be completely covered by my stocking,
and that by reason of the fact that the reinforcing inner layer 2 is formed with a series 1 through the opening 4 upon the top of the' said toe, the said raw cotton lying between the two layers 1 and 2.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A stocking, having a double thickness of material at the upper side of the toe portion thereof, the inner ply being provided with a series of openings or perforations in which the toes of the wearer are adapted to fit, as and for the purpose set forth. I
2. A stocking, having a double thickness of material at the upper side of the toe portion thereof, the inner ply being provided with a series of openings or perforations in which the toes of the wearer are adapted to fit, and the outer ply having an enlarged opening therein into which the hand may be passed, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib- Should
