TO ALI. WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, T. E. SEXTON, of Wilmington, New Castle county, Delaware, have invented an improved BaiLCoupling and I do hereby declare the followingto be-a full, clear,-and exact description of-the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters. of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists of two plates lapped together and adaptedand secured to the ends oi two rails, substantiallj as described hereafter, so as to form a secure, unyielding-coupling for the said rails.- My invention further consists oftwo or more lips formed on one plate for underlapping and confining the folds of the other plate; as described hereafter? In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my inventiomI will newv proceed to describe its construction and operation. On reference to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification-'- Figure 1. is a side view ofmy improved rail-coupling.
Figure 2, a transverse section.
Figure 3, an inverted plan view. 7
Figures 4 and 5, views showing the two portions of the coupling separate. from each other; and
Figure 6 a modification of the invention.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The improved coupling consists of two plates, A and A, the former being bent to the shape illustrated in fig 4, and the latter to thc form shown in fig. 5, the portion a of the plate A fitting in the space 6 between the folds dand d of the plate A. 1 Two lipsee are formed at the bent-portion of the plate A, on or near each edge ofthe same, the lips being made by cutting the plate and bending the cut portions to the form represented in fig. 2, so as to underlap the folds of the plate A and bind them firmly against the plate A. The portions it of both plates are bentto conform to the shapeof the rails, and are secured thereto by two or more bolts, 2'2. The ends of the two rails are thusfirmly embraced by and between the two plates, which form .asecure and unyielding coupling. Instead of the wide laps or folds already described, narrow folds similar to those shown in fig. 6 may be made in the plates, the lips e being unnecessary in this case.
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-F 1; The two plates A and A, lapped together and adapted and secured to the ends of two rails, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
2 The lips e on tbe plate A, arranged to underlap and coufinc'the folds of the plate A, as set forth.
In testimony whereofI h e signed my name to'this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
T. E. SEXTON. Witnesses CHARLES E. Fos'rnn, W. J. R. DELANY.
