DANIEL W. TOWER, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE GRAND RAPIDS BRASS COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 669,018, dated February 26, 1901.
Application filed April 9, 1900. Serial No. 12,261. (No modelf,
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL W. TOWER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Iniprovements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hinges and analogous articles; and it consistsof constructing a hinge of a leaf or body portion, preferably of steel, an outer portion or plate forming a covering for the leaf or body portion and preferably made of sheet-brass, although other material may be employed, and an inner plate-section consisting of a plate of suitable metallic ma terial, the cover and inner plates when in position inclosing and concealing the leaf or body portion before and after the hinge is secured in position; and to this end the invention aims to produce a hinge or analogous article having the appearance of being constructed entirely of the covering or outer plate and having the appearance of great strength, solidity, and richness.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the specification, wherein like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which- Figure 1 shows a plan view of the hinge. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line m 00 thereof. Fig. 3 shows an edge view of a hinge when the door to which the hinge is applied is open; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view, on an enlarged scale, taken through that portion of the hinge containing the screws which secure the hinge in position.
Referring to the drawings by referenceietters, and in which is illustrated a hinge made of two sections, one of greater length than the other, C denotes the body portion or leaf of the longer section, which is provided with an extension centrally of its inner end bent to form an eye 0', and D indicates the body portion or leaf of the shorter section, curved upwardly;at its inner portion and provided with a pair of extensions, each bent to form an eye, between which is arranged the eye Gof the body portion or leaf 0. The body portions 0 and D are constructed, preferably, of steel plates or metallic material of a suitable length and thickness.
The reference-letter A denotes the covering-plate for the body portion D and is preferably made from a sheet of brass, although other metallic material may be employed. The plate A is constructed or stamped with an inclined rim A at its front and a portion of the sides and then bent upwardly at an angle to the remaining portion and downwardly, as at I 1 forming thereby the recess I and the plate or cover substantially L- shaped. By constructing the plate A in the manner shown the body portion or leaf when in position is entirely concealed from view.
The reference-letter E indicates the inner plate, which is formed with an inclined flange E engaging when in position the inner face of the plate or cover A.
The reference-letter B denotes the'plate or cover for the body portion or leaf 0 and is formed with an inclined rim B and at its inner end with an extension B which is bent to surround the eye 0 and engage the lower face of the leaf 0. The cover B is preferably made from sheet-brass, although other material may be employed. The plate or cove B is adapted to entirely conceal the body portion or leaf 0 when the latter is in position.
The reference-letter E denotes the inner plate for the longer section of the hinge and is provided with an inclined flange E engaging when in position the inner face of the cover B. The plate E is further provided with a portion pressed or stamped outwardly, as at E, in which is seated the end of the extension B The cover A is cut away, so that the extension B of the cover B can be arranged between the same, and the sections are pivotally connected together by means of the pintle H, extending through the cover A and the eyes of the body portions or leaves 0 and D. By bending the cover A, as at I 1 not only is the body portion or leaf D concealed from view, but the portion I forms a stop for the movement of the longer section. The
portion of the plate A forming the stop is arranged at right angles to the longer section.
The cover-plates are provided with a series of countersunk openings, forming the flange H, and the inner plates are formed with a series of openings, so that each will be provided with an upwardly-extending flange H The openings in the cover and inner plates register with one another and with suitable openings in the body portions or leaves. The reference-letter F denotes an eyelet extending through the said openings, engaging the flanges H H connecting the plates and body portions together, and forming a passage for the screws G for securing the hinge to a door or other object.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is- 1. In a hinge, the combination of a pair of leaves each provided with an eye and hinged together, covering-plates for said leaves and embracing the eyes of said leaves for concealing them from View, the construction of one of said covering-plates providing a stop at its inner end, and means for securing said plates to said leaves.
2. In a hinge, the combination of a pair of leaves one of which is provided with a pair of covering-plates providing at its inner end a stop arranged at right angles to the other of said covering-plates, and means for connecting said plates and leaves together.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DANIEL W. TOWER.
