TO vLL'WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:i
d Be it known that L'CHARLES W. PACKER, of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, 'State of Pennsylvania, have invented an improved Box for Hatsand Bonnets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention consists of a box, constructed in the peculiarA manner fully described hereafter, for the pur pose of holding hats or bonnets, and preventing the abrasion of andinjury to the same during transportation.
In order to enable'others to make and use my invention, I will non' proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being. had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in whichv Figure' 1 is a perspective view of; my improved box for hats and bonnets.
Figure 2, a sectional elevation of the box with the lid raised,l and Figure 3 the same with the lid closed.
Similar letters' relate to similar parts throughout 'the several views.
The body A of the box is, in the present instance, eight-sided, (but its form may be varied without departing. from the main features of my inveution,) and to the upper edge of the rear ofthe box is hinged a lid, B, having on its edge a iiange, a. 'A vertical slot, x, is cut in the front side of the box, and to the lower edge of this side is hinged a leaf, b, of appropriate width, the said leaf-being maintained in conta-ct with't'he box by the flange a of the lid. To the bottom ofthe box, near the centre of the same, is secured a standard, C, the height of which is somewhat less than that of the box.
Ordinary hat-boxes are so constructed that when the hat is introduced. or withdrawn it is liable to injury by handling. Moreover, a. hat resting withx its crown on the bottom of the box is apt to become worn and its nap removed during transportation. When a hat has to be placed in or removed from my improved box the lid is d raised, the leai` b lowered, and the hand is introduced througlrthe vertical opening 11.', either to hold the hat as it is placed carefully on the standard C, or'to insert it beneath the brim of the hat when the latter" has to be withdrawn, all danger of injury from the necessity of handling the hat being thus avoided; a-t the same time,A the hat being in a. position the reverse of that usually occupied in ordinary boxes, the crown cannot be abraded or its nap'removed. -If desired, the standard may be made hollow, andmay have at the top a detachable or other suitable cover, suoas to form a receptacle for a hat-brush or otherobject.
i I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A box, A, having a vertical opening, zu, and a leaf, ,a central standard, C, and lid B, all being constructed and arranged `substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The combinationof a box constructed as'above described and alstandard or pillar, C, made hollow, and furnished with a cover, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHAS. W. PACKER.
