ELANDIER HEATH, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WORK-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,886, dated May 13, 1873 application filed April 3, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELANDER HEATH, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement on Work-Boxes for Ladies; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improvement in work-boxes for ladies; and consists mainly of an oblong box, with a portion of the interior filled with wood or other material, which is provided with vertical holes of suitable depth and size for spools. Between the rows of spools or holes is made a cavity for implements and buttons, with shallow, rounded, or oval ends, so that loose buttons and small ware can be easily removed. One end of the interior of the box is provided with a cushion for pins and needles, and the back edges of the box and cover are beveled, so that when the lid is raised it will remain in position, and the hinges or butts will not project, as will hereinafter more fully appear;
Referring to the drawing, Figure 1 is a transverse section; Fig. 2, a plan or top view.
A represents the box, in the bottom of which I place a block of wood or other material, provided at each side with rows of vertical holes, B B, of sufiicient diameter and depth to correspond to the size of the spool, but so as to project sufficiently far from the top as to be taken hold of and easily removed. An oblong shallow depression, O, is made in the block, between the rows of holes, which is provided with oval-shaped or rounded ends. In this depository I place buttons, thimble, scissors, and other small ware.
It will be observed that by thus constructing the depository the small ware, and more especially the buttons, can be easily taken out by the fingers, which would not be the case if the depository was constructed with square or abrupt ends.
The box is constructed of scented wood, and a cushion, D, is made in one end, which is stufi'ed with sawdust of the same, which always imparts an agreeable perfume.
The rear'outer corner'of the top of the box E and the lower outer corner of the bottom of lid F are beveled, so that when the box is opened and the lid placed vertically it will remain in that position. Not only that, but by this construction I am enabled to use the common butts or hinges, and draw them in, so that they will not project and mar and scratch the nicely-polished furniture of a ladys boudoir. I am also enabled to polish'the back of the box by machinery without coming in contact with the end of the hinges.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1: The box A provided with holes B B, and depression C having rounded ends, substan-, tially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of the box and lid, when provided with beveled edges E F, as set forth,
for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
ELANDER HEATH. [L. s.]
Witnesses;
G. W. M. SMITH, PHILIP MAHLER.
