POLE-TIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 668,316, dated February 19, 1901.
Application filed Tulle 21, 1900. Serial NO- 211068. (N0 mdll) To a/ZZ whom it marifoon/cern.'
Beit known that I, JOHN B. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Emerson, in the county of Mills and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in PoleTips; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is designed to provide a tip for vehicle poles or tongues having positive fastening means for the neck-yoke, which will admit'of the center having an opening of minimum size and which is of material benet in strength, durability, and neatness of appearance.
The invention consists of a metallic tip having a spiral retaining-rib in addition to the shoulder or iiange against which the said center bears when in service, the said spiral rib extending once around the tip and having its end portions tapering and merging into the plane of the sides of the tip and overlapping slightly.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and the drawings hereto attached.
While the essential and characteristic features of the invention are necessarily susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which* Figure l is a perspective view of the tip, showing it applied to the end portion of a vehicle-pole. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the neck-yoke and center in position. Fig. 3 is a section. Fig. 4 is a front view of the central portion of a neck-yoke and center.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
p The tip l is malleable cast, by preference, and is in, the form of a thimble or socket to receive the end of the pole or tongue 2, to which it is secured in any approved and substantial manner.
The shoulder or oblique [lange 3, near the inner end of the tip, forms a rest for-the center 4, applied to the neck-yoke 5. A rib 6 extends spirally around the tip, the end portions tapering and slightly overlapping and vanishing into the plane of the outer side of the tip at one side, thereby leaving the broadest part of the rib opposite the flange or shoulder 3, so as to act jointly therewith in retaining the center 4 in place. The center 4 is held between two stops, presenting an eX- tended surface for the center to engage with,
vthereby obviating injury thereto when under strain. The spiral rib materially strengthens the tip and enables it to be made much thinner than otherwise.
The center 4: has a circular opening 7, through which the tip is thrust. This opening is just large enough to receive the tip .and a part of the rib, as shown most clearly in Fig. 3.
inasmuch as the rib 6 extends only once around the tip, it is necessary to turn the neck-yoke once around the pole when placing it in position or removing it therefrom in order to clear the said rib.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- A pole-tip having a shoulder at its inner end, and a spiral retaining-rib in front of the said shoulder, said rib extending once around the tip and having its end portions tapering, slightly overlapped and merging into the plane of the sides of the tip at one side, substantially as specified.
- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN B. MOORE. [L. S.]
