Figure 2 is an Ainside View of the poi-tion of the same to which the holder is attached.
Figure 3 is a perspective view ofthe holder detached from the shutters.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved instrument by which window-shutters may be hohl at a greater or less angle so as -to permit acireulation of air, and at the same tiniewholly or partially exnclude the' rays ofthe sun; and itoonsists of an in nproved window shutter-holder formed by the combination of the notched or angular bar withthe piece bywhich it is pivoted to one shutter, and with vthe cat-eh by'means of which itis connected to the other shutter.
Aand` B are window-shutters, which are hinged to thewin'dow-frame C in the ordinary manner. The` shutters A and B are secured, when closed, with a bolt,lD, in the usual manner. E is the piece to which the bar' F is pivoted. This piece is secured to the shutter A with screws. The middle part ofthe piece E to which 4the bar F is pivoted is raised up, so that when the bar F hangs down it may swingtfree from the shutter 'to guard it from becoming rubbed by said bar.I G is the piece into which the free' end of the har F is latched.
lThis piece G is secured to the shutter B by screws, and has a catch or loop formed upon it for the reception oi the bar F. The general form'of the bar is curved, and it has three or more notches or straight portions` formed upon it at diil`erent angles to each other, so that it willsecure the shutters to each other when opened-to a great-er or less extent, as desired. The rst of these notches is at such a distance from the pivoting point of the bar that the shutters will be heild with their edges, meeting, thus entirely shutting out. the rays ot'4 the sun, but allowing a circulation of air through'the openings at the bottornand top of the shutters. The other notches are used when it is desired to have the shutters opened to a greater extent. The notches in the har F- are .so-formed, and the bar itselfis so curved, that both shutterswill always stand at' the same angle, or he equally inclined, whether theyare opened much or little..A The holder may he placed `either Vabove or below l the bolt D, as may bemost convenient; and it is so constructed that it will hold the shutters securely againstbeing blown either open or'shuhland will be at all times, whether in use or hangjriugdown, ventirely out of the Way of the window-sash. i
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An irnproved shutter-holder, formed by the combination of the bar Fand pieces E and G, when said bnr is formed with notches or straight parts, the planesof which are at an angle with each other, substantially as herein shown and described, and for theV purpose set forth.
WILLIAM F. HOFMANN.
