E. M. G ULDSMITH. CARRYING DEVJCE FOR POCKET BOOKS, 81.0.
(Appliesti oh filed m 28, 1900.)
(No Model EDWIN M. GOLDSMITH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CARRYING DEVICE FOR POCKET-BOOKS, 86C- SIPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 667,083, dated January 29, 1901.
Application filed May 28, 1900. Serial No. 18,196. (No model.)
To all whom it m/cty concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN M. GOLDSMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carrying Devices for Pocket-Books, 850., which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a pocket-book,
purse, card-case, &c.,which is provided with a head on the exterior thereof whereby the book, &c. may be readily carried in the hand, with certain of the fingers inserted underneath said head, provision being also made for folding the supporting members of the head on the book, 850., so that the head rests comparatively flat thereon.
Figures 1 and 2 represent perspective views of a carrying device for a pocket-book embodying my invention. Figs. 3 and 4 represent vertical sections of the device the parts whereof are in different positions. Fig. 5 represents a side elevation of a modification.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a pocket-book of usual form.
B designates a head or button having a tubular shank 0, formed of sections D and E, fitted to each other telescopically and having the spring F connected with the same, whereby the outer or upper section D will be folded or drawn into the inner or lower section E, causing a pressure inwardly on the head, while allowing the same to yield outwardly. The head B is hinged to the section D,whereby it may be placed in operative position at a right angle to the shank, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5, and when not required for use folded fiat against said shank, the latter being also folded, as shown in Fig. 3. The section E is hinged or pivoted to the plate G, which is attached in any suitable manner to the exterior of the pocket-book, thus connecting the device with the latter, while the shank may be folded on said plate, and consequently on the pocket-book.
The operation is as follows: The shank is thrown out to a position at a right angle to the pocket-book, as shown in Fig. 3. Then the fingers may be inserted between the head and the pocket-book, said head yielding, owing to the spring F, (see Fig. 4,) thereby causing said head to press against the back of the fingers, while the thumb is passed under the pocket-book on the side opposite to the head, by which provision the book may be nicely carried in the hand and in a measure safely retained thereon. When the fingers are removed from beneath the head, the section D of the shank is drawn into the section E by the spring F, contracting the length of the shank, after which the shank is turned down on the pocket-book and the head folded thereover, thus placing the latter in a compact form on the pocket-book, as shown in Fig. 1.
In Fig. 5 the shank is formed of leaves or links E, jointed, as at F, with the spring F at the joint, whereby it may be held distended, properly locating the head D and permitting the folding of said leaves or links on each other and of the head over the latter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as-new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A carrying device for a pocket-book or like article consisting of a head, an attachingplate, a shank formed of extensible sections, one of which is hinged to said head and the other to said plate, and a spring which is connected with said sections and adapted to exert closing force on said head, when in use, and restore the shank to its primary reduced length when not in use, the sectional shank and-the head being foldable on the attachingplate.
2. In a carrying device for a pocket-book, &c., a head, a shank and an attaching-plate, said head being hinged to said shank and the latter hinged to said plate whereby the head and shank may be folded on a pocket-book, &c., said shank being formed of telescopic sections, whereby it may be extended and having a spring attached to the same, whereby pressure maybe imparted to said head when in use and the shank may be restored to its primary reduced length when not in use.
3. A head, a shank formed of extensible sections, an attaching-plate, a hinged connection for one of said sections with said head, and a hinged connection for the other section with said plate, said parts being combined forming an improved carrying device for a pocket-book or like article.
EDWIN M. GOLDSMITH.
