LEAFLESS PHOTOGRAPH-ALBUM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 13, 1920.
Application filed April 1, 1919. Serial No. 286,651
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PAUL H. KnAn-rsoH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Astoria, in the county of Clatsop and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leafless Photograph-Albums, of which the following is a specification.
M I invention is an improvement in leafless photograph albums, and has for its object to provide a device of the character specified, adapted for containing mounted photographs, wherein a container is provided for the photographs in the form of a tray arranged to retain the photographs in flat extended position and to permit them to be easily inspected.
In the drawings Figure l is a perspective view of the album empty,
Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section,
Fig. 3 is a front view.
The present invention is an improvement over my prior Patent i i-1,211,179 granted January 2, 1917, and the improved album consists of a body or tray consisting of a bottom 1 and side wall 2, and partial end re taining walls 3 extending from the ends of the side wall. Near the open side of the tray, that is, near the edge remote from the wall 2, the bottom has a transverse rib 4: extending the full length thereof, and forming a supporting leg for the bottom to hold the bottom at an incline or angle with respect to the horizontal when the album is supported on a flat surface, as, for instance, a table.
A cover 5 is provided, and the said cover is hinged to the wall 2 by means of a lace 6. This lace is passed through openings in the cover and in the side wall 2 in the manner shown in Fig.- 1, and the connection so arranged forms a long hinge which extends practically the full height of the side wall, and permits the album to hold one or as many photographs as can be stacked up to the height of the walls of the tray, and in each instance, the cover will lie on the uppermost photograph.
A folding side wall 7 is connected with the free edge of the cover, the said wall being hinged to the inner face of the cover as indicated at 8, to fold thereupon, or to stand approximately perpendicular thereto, and the said side is limited in its unfolding movement with respect to the cover, to a position where it is perpendicular to the cover, by means of flexible braces 9. These braces which are of cord or ribbon are ene less loops which are passed through openings in the cover and in the wall 7 as shown more particularly in Fig. l and they are arranged near the ends of the cover and wall 7.
The photographs or cards to be arranged within the album are indicated at 10, and they are stacked one upon the other within the tray. The inclination of the bottom of the tray prevents slipping forward of the photographs, tending to move said photographs against the fixed wall 2 and the photographs are prevented from moving longitudinally of the bottom by the retaining walls 3. In order to inspectthe contents of the album, it is only necessary to swing the cover back into the position of Fig. 1.
The folding wall 7 will fold down upon the cover, while when the cover is closed this folding side will take the position of Figs. 2 and 3, lying on the topmost photographs. The improved album may be made of any size and of any material, a d the laces may be cord, ribbon or the like,
In use the improved album is held on the lap or laid on a suitable support, and with one end facing the user. The top is opened as shown in Fig. 1, toward the left hand of the user, and the photographs as they are inspected are laid down upon the cover, face downward. lVhen finished the tray or body of the album is turned over onto the u photographs in the cover or tr y, after which the album is reversed, the cover is raised, and the front wall is turned up against the cover.
I claim 1. An album of the character specified, comprising a bottom having a fixed side wall and short retaining end walls or flanges extending from the ends of the side wall, and a. cover hinged to the side wall at one edge and having at the other edge a front wall hinged to the cover to fold upon the same, and means for limiting the unfolding move ment of said wall to a position substantially perpendicular to the cover, and supporting rib extending longitudinally of the hottom on the underface thereof adjacent to the side edge remote from the fixed side Wall.
2. An album of the character specified, comprising a bottom having a fixed side Wall and short retaining end Walls or flanges extending from the ends of the side Wall, and a cover hinged to the side Wall at one edge and having at the other edge a front Wall hinged to the cover to fold upon the 10 same, and means for limiting the unfolding movement of said Wall to a position substantially perpendicular to the cover.
