Description
March 17, 1953 D. RUBIN GARMENT BAG Filed Jan. 8, 1951 l I H INVENTOR.
DAVID RUBIN BY W ATTORNEYS Patented Mar. 17, 1953 UNITED STATES OFFICE 2 Claims.
The invention relates to garment bags and has for its object the obtaining of an inexpensive construction which may be used not only for holding a stored garment but also as a shipping package.
It is a further object to obtain a construction which can be quickly and easily engaged with the garment while supported on a hanger, and which is provided with a hand-hold for convenience in carrying the package.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described.
In the drawings:
Fig. l is an elevation showing the package as engaged with a hanger-supported garment before closing and folding, the same;
Fig. 2 is a cross section on line 2-2, Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the lower end portion of the bag;
Fig. 4 is an elevation of the refolded bag with the garment therein;
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section through Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6 is a perspective View illustrating a, hand engaged with the slitted upper end of the bag to carry the same.
The bag is formed from a rectangular sheet of paper or other suitable material which is folded longitudinally along a line A to form a front portion B and rear portion C. The latter extends beyond the opposite edge of the front portion and is folded along a line D to form a flap E which overlaps the front extending at least one-third of the width thereof. The flap E is slitted at F near the lower end to form a portion E, which is permanently folded over and attached to the front B, and the front and rear are also sealed to each other in a narrow band B adjacent to the bottom, which band may if desired be reinforced by a strip B Centrally of this band is a transversely extending slit G for a purpose later explained. At their upper ends the folded portions B, C and E have their opposite corners folded over as indicated at H and I. The fold H is permanently secured but the fold I is unfolded for the insertion of the garment and after subsequent folding is secured by a suitable fastener such as J. The central part of the front and rear portions between the corner folds Hand I have registering transverse slits K therein a short distance below their upper edges The bag constructed as above described may be easily engaged with a garment such as L, which is suspended by a hanger M from a hook or pin N. The bag with the flap and with the corner I unfolded may be drawn sidewise over the garment while thus supported. After refolding the flap E and corner I, the lower end of the bag may be lifted to bring the slit G in registration with the slit K thereby folding the bag with the garment therein at the middle. The hook M of the hanger may then be removed from its support and the portion of the top of the bag between the folded corners may be inserted through the slit G of the bottom bringing the slit K in registration therewith. A hand may then be inserted through the registering slits, the portions of the bag above the same forming a handle convenient for carrying the package. The hook M may be dropped over the portion of the bag below the slits and retained thereby in a position convenient for getting hold of when it is again used for supporting the package.
As above stated the bag is suitable for use as a sales package which will afford good protection to the garment during transportation. After the garment is removed the bag is preserved for reuse either for enclosing and carrying another garment or for a garment while in storage.
For convenience in inspecting the contents of the bag, a window is formed in the front thereof with a transparent covering 0. Also is desired the portions of the bag forming the hand-hold may be reinforced by a tape cemented or otherwise secured thereto as indicated by dotted lines at P, Fig. 1.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A garment holding bag formed of a rectangular blank folded to form registering front and back portions with the fold located at one side, said portions being sealed to each other at their lower ends to form a narrow transversely extending band with a central slit therein, the upper end having folded corner portions on opposite sides of the center with a narrow portion therebetween, the corner portions on one side being permanently sealed and those on the opposite side unfoldable to permit of separating the front and back portions of the bag for drawing the same sidewise over a garment suspended on a hanger and engaging the permanently sealed folded corner portion with the top of said garment to suspend the bag therefrom while the corner portions on the other side of the center are refolded; the lower end of the bag with the garment therein being then raised to fold the bag at the middle and the narrow portion between the folded corners inserted through said slit to retain the bag thus folded.
2. The construction as in claim 1 in which said narrow portion between the corners has a slit therein which is registerable with the aforesaid slit for the insertion of a hand through both slits,
