T 0 all whom it may 0041007 02 Be it known that I, Auousr WoLrr, a citi- Zen of the United States of America, residing in New York, in the borough of the Bronx, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music-Stands, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved music-stand in which the legs as well as the folding music-rack can be compactly fold ed into a casing to be conveniently carried. In folding music-stands heretofore in use,a separate case for containing the folded stand was provided which very often became lost during a performance. in the present invention, the containing case is made an integral part of the stand, so that there is no danger whatsoever of loss, and a stand is provided which can be more quickly set up and when set up will remain in a firm and steady position. A further object is to provide such a device in which the musicrack is made.integral with the supporting stand and all of the parts made adjustable to different heights and angles. A still further object is to provide a stand of this character for supporting cameras, telescopes and the like.

\Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features, construction and combination of parts, as will hereinafter be more fully described and pointed out in the claims.

Specification of Letters Patent.

Referring to the drawings and more particularly to Fig. 1 thereof, the invention comprises a casing 30, which may be made of metal, fiber, leather or other suitable material and is provided with annular shoulders 31 at each end adapted to receive a top and bottom cap 30 and 81 respectively. A telescoping center rod comprising sections 32, and 3%..- is mounted between the stationary bracket member 35 secured to the interior of the casing at the upper end thereof and the slidable bracket member 36, slidably mounted at 37 at the lower end thereof. The bracket 36, and particularly its lower end, may be used as a handle or means for pulling the center rod section 32 out of the casing 30, or for pushing said section and the sleeve 39 with the legs 44 back into the casing. A head 38 is provided on the slidable bracket member to limit its downward movement. A short sleeve 39 is mounted slidably on the telescoping center rod 82 and is provided at its upper end with a stationary collar 40 and on its lower portion with a slidable collar a l. Radial lugs are provided. on the collar 40 and corresponding radial lugs 12:: are provided on the slidable collar 1 to which are pivotally secured. the upper ends of the legs ist and the struts respectively. The lower ends of the strut members 45 are pivotally secured intermediate the ends of the legs ie, and a helical spring to is mounted between the collars 40 and ll, for forcing the legs to their spread-out position when the bracket 36 and the telescopic center rod 32 are tended.

An upwardly projecting lug 47 is provided on the bracket 35, to which is pivotally secured a cam 48 provided with a handle portion 4E9 adapted to frictionally hold the center rod 33 in extended position. The center rod 34: is held in extended position by providing slots 50 and a sleeve 51 on the end of the rod 33 adapted to press against the rod 34. by movement of the sleeve 51.

The folding music rack 52 is provided at its base with a downwardly extending portion 53, pivotally held between forwardly projecting lugs 54k, at the upper end of the rod By tightening the winged nut 55, provided. on the of the screw 56, the rack is securely held in position and by loosening the nut the same is free to swing into folded position to be inserted in the casing 30.

The operation of my improved invention is as follows:

The rod 32 and the bracket 36 are lowered from the casing, allowing the legs to drop out and spread by reason of the pressure of the spring 46 against the collar 41. The telescoping rods are extended and held in position by the clutch members 48' and 51, and the music rack placed in position as above pointed out. 7

Fig. 6 shows the folded position of the devices for carrying the same.

I have illustrated preferred and satisfactory forms of my invention, but it is 0bvious that changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit thereof except as may be required by the claims.

I have described the invention as applicable to a music-stand, but it is very clear that it may also be applied to cameras, telescopes, and the like.

I claim 1. In a device of the character described, a casing, a center rod in said casing, a bracket connected with the lower portion of said rod and having a longitudinal portion arranged between the casing and the center rod,-and in sliding engagement With the casing, and folding legs connectedwith the center rod for supporting the device.

2. In a device of the character described, a casing, a center rod in said casing, means having limited movement relatively to the casing, for projecting said rod from the easing, a sleeve mounted to slide on said rod, legs connected with said sleeve, strut members each having one end connected to one f the legs and the other mounted to slide lengthwise of said sleeve, and spring means disposed between said legs and said strut members.

in a device of the character described, a casing, a telescopic center rod in said casing, means mounted laterally of said rod to slide on the casing and adapted to project said rod from said casing, a predetermined distance, a. sleeve mounted to slide on said rod, and adapted to be moved on said rod into said casing, and folding legs connected with said sleeve.
