Stands and upright supports; tripod and like stands.-A telescopic support for seats, cameras &c., comprises two or more telescopic tubular sections enclosing tension springs which support the section carrying the load, and which are secured to the upper end of a vertical rod carried by another telescopic member or by the base of the support. The springs may be utilized merely to raise the seat &c., a clamping collar being provided to secure the support in any desired position. The section a, Fig. 1, which supports the load is itself supported by a number of metal helical springs n fixed in radial slots in two discs l, m, the lower of which, m, slides upon a rod f to which the upper disc l is secured and which is fixed to the disc g in the tube b and either supported by a spring e or attached to the base d by a cord. The springs, which may be replaced by indiarubber strips, are of different lengths and are arranged in pairs in diametrically opposite slots in the discs l, m, while the rod f may be provided with a feather or may be of square cross-section to prevent rotation. A clamping device, Fig. 5, for securing the sections in any desired position comprises a torsion spring j attached to a disc nut i<1> and one of the two projecting ends h<1> of a clamping collar h. In the form shown in Fig. 9, the springs n<2> serve merely to adjust the height of the support, the rod f being secured to the base d. In the application of the invention to a tripod camera stand, spirit levels and also means of the glove fastener type are provided to hold the legs in the folded position. The clamping device used for securing the stand at any desired height is shown in Fig. 12; a spring j<2> serves to bring the ends h<1> of a clamp h together through the agency of a cam lever s, a ball u in a slotted tube t and a pressure plate v. Means for lubricating the sliding sections is also provided.
