To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS J. KARGEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maywood, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in display devices.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a novel display device, such as a stand, which may be extended to a considerable height or contracted to relatively compact form, and which may be quickly and easily extended or contracted, and which will reliably support a considerable weight, when extended, without collapsing from the position to which it may be adjusted.
A further object of my invention is to provide a display stand with an article supporting member which may be quickly and easily adjusted to difierent angles, and which will be reliably retained in the position to which it may be adjusted.
Other novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stand made in accordance with the principles of my invention and provided with a pivoted article supporting member shown in solid and dotted lines respectively in two positions.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of a part of the stand shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view, partly in vertical section and partly in elevation of the frictional holding device provided in the extensible standard of the stand shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a cross section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged view similar to Fig. 3, showing a modified form of frictional holding device.

Specification of Letters Patent.

1 designates a base adapted to support an extensible vertical standard comprising,
preferably the following described parts which extends through the wall of the tube 3.
Mounted in the slot and notch 4 is a bow spring 5 adapted to have its ends bearagainst the inner side of the outer member '2, and having its convex side adapted to rest against the wall of the inner tube. The
bow spring 5 has its central portion adapted to extend inwardly beyond the inner wall of the inner tube, and is adapted to bear yieldingly against the periphery of a support 6 comprising a vertical rod which is 'slidable in the inner tube 3, and which at its upper end pivotally supports a flat tablet 'or article supporting member 7, which is provided with two staples 8, in its under side, which are pivotal supports for a rectangular eye 9 formed in the upper end of the rod 6.
For supporting the article supporting member 7 in such positions as it may be adjusted to, it is provided in its under side with a staple 10 to which is pivoted by an eye 11 the upper end of a rod 12 which is slidably mounted in an inner tube 13, which is secured in the upper end of an outer member or tube 14, the lower end of which is pivoted to a horizontal bolt 15, which extends through the two arms of a U shaped clamping member 16, and is adapted to draw said arms toward each other so that they may tightly clamp the rod 6. By loosening the bolt 15, the clamping member 16, may be vertically adjusted on the rod 6.
The inner tube 13 is provided in its outer periphery with an arcuate notch 17, the middle portion of which extends through the wall of the tube, and has mounted in it a bow spring 18, the convex side ofwhich adjacent to its ends is adapted to rest upon the outer wall of the inner tube 13, and which is adapted to have its middle portion bear against the rod 12, said middle portion, when the rod 12 is removed from the tube sition, after which it will be relea's'ably and reliably held by means of the bow spring 5.
The member 7 may then be swung to the desired angle on the rod 6, in which position it will be releasably and reliably held 'b the bow swin is bearin against the b b L4 rod 12 and outer member 14, said rod and member, together with the clamping member 16 forming an extensible brace for supporting the member 7. p
In assemblingthe device, the bow spring 5 is first inserted in the notch 4t, after'which the inner member 3is slipped into'the' outer member 2 to the position shown in Fig. 2, in which position the spring will be retained in place by the outer member, which. may be secured permanently to the inner member in any suitable manner, as by soldering, or by being tightly fitted therein.
In the form of my invention shownin Figs. 6 and 7, the parts are constructed similarly to the corresponding parts in the other form of my invention, excepting that in the notches 4, of which two are provided respectively in opposite sides of an inner tube 3, there are respectively mounted upon said tube two friction plates 19 adapted to respectively bear against opposite sides of the rod 6: Two arcuate or how springs 5 are respectively located in the notches 4 and have their con vex sides respectively bearing against the plates 19, the ends of said springs bearing against the inner wall of the outer tubular member 2 in which the tube 3 is secured.
In the form shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the springs 5 normally force the plates 19 against the rod 6, thereby reliably holding it in the position to WlHCh it may be adjusted.
While I have illustratedmy invention as applied to a stand, such as is adapted to support hat or shoe samples, it is obvious that my improvement is adapted to be used for various other purposes than herein mentioned.
I do not limit my invention to the structure shown and described, as modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
1. In a display device, a tubular outer member, an inner tube secured therein and provided with a slot, a spring mounted in said slot at the outer side of and supported by the outer wall of the inner tube and adapted-to bear against the outer member and having a portion extending through the slot beyond the inner wall of the inner tube,- and amember longitudinally slidable in the inner tube and adapted to bear against and compress said spring.
2. In a display device, a tubular outer member, an inner tube secured therein and provided in its outer periphery with a notch having its middle portion extending through the adjacent wall of the inner tube, a bow spring having its convex side adjacent to its ends bearing against the notched portion of the inner tubeand extending through said notch beyond the innerwall of the inner tube, and retained in saidnotch by the outer member, and a member longitudr nally slidable in the inner tube and adapted to bear against and compress said spring.
3 In a display device, a support, an article supporting member pivoted thereto, an outer tubular member pivoted to said support, an inner tube secured in said outer member and provided with a slot, a mem ber pivoted to said article supporting member and slidable in said inner tube, and a spring located in said slot and having a portion extending through said slot and bearing against said slidable member.
