UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB J. ELIAS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MAX L.
- BREDE, OF SAME PLACE.
CAP FOR MILK-JARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 666,743, dated January 29, 1901.
Application filed June 2, 1900.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB J. ELIAS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caps for Milk-Jars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in caps for milk-jars, its object being to provide such caps with a simple attachment whereby they may be readily removed from the bottles.
The invention in its preferred formis fully described and explained in this specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure'l is a perspective view of a cap provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a central section of the cap, showing the lifting attachment as it may appear after the first step in securing it to the cap. View of the cap with the .attachment com pletely secured in place, and Fig. 4 is a similar section showing the free end of the attachment lifted up from the cap for use.
In the views, A is the usual circular cap, of pulp or fiber board, the cap being preferably coated with parafiin in the ordinary manner. In this cap, and preferably near its margin, is inserted a strip of sheet metal bent into the form of a sta is having twolegs B Bof une ual P q length, said ends being thrust through the cap, as shown in Fig. 2, and bent down upon its surface, as shown in Fig. 3. When thus bent down, the two ends B B lie flat upon the face of the cap, and it is in this shape that the-caps are packed for shipment and are inserted in the necks of the bottles on which Fig. 3'is a similar Serial No. 18,888. (No model.)
they are used. When it is desired to remove a cap for the purpose of opening the bottle, the longer end B of the attachment is lifted up to approximately the position shown in Fig. 4 and is of sufficient length and size to be held firmly between the thumb and forefinger of the operator and serve as a means for detaching the cap from the neck of the bottle, the shorter end of the attachment serving merely as a means for fastening the attachment to the cap.
It is evident that this attachment may be modified in various ways by any mechanic to whose attention my improvement is brought, and I desire, theretore, not to limit the invention to the particular form and arrangement of parts shown herein, but prefer to give it the definition appearing in the following claim.
,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with a circular bottle-cap, of a flexible strip. having one end passing through the cap at a point within its margin and bent back again through the cap to secure it thereto, the other end being adapted to liefiat upon the cap, but capable of being turned upward to afford a handle for removing the cap from the bottle; substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, this 22d day of May, A. D.
I JACOB J. ELIAS. Witnesses:
CHAS. O. SHERVEY, S. BLISS.
