GARMENT-SUPPORT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 665,314, dated January 1, 1901.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LINFORD J. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olivet, in the county of Eaton and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Garment- Support, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to garment-supporters, and particularly to a coat-hanger; and the objects in view are to provide a simple, inexpensive, and eflicient device of this class which may be folded into compact form, to provide in connection with a coat-hanger a hat-hook which is adapted when the support is folded to lie within the contour of the body portion of the device, to provide means whereby the relatively adjustable members of the support are limited in their relative movements, and to provide such a construction as to remove the hanger or hat-hook attachment out of the path of the collar of a coat supported by the device, whereby the collar is adapted to occupy a natural or normal position.

Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a garment-supporter constructed in accordance with my invention, the parts being extended, as in operative position. Fig. 2 is a central transverse sectional view of the same, showing the position of a coat applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the support folded.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlngs.

The device embodying my invention is of folding construction and consists of oppositely-extending looped members 1 and 2, provided at the extremities of their arms with eyes I and 2 mounted to slide, respectively, upon the arms of the other member, whereby the members are connected for longitudinal sliding adjustment. The loop 1 is of greater length than the loop 2and is provided at intermediate points of its arms with stops 3, consisting in the construction illustrated of coiled eyes which are arranged in the paths of the eyes 2 to limit the extension of the loops, and as the loop 1 from said intermediate eyes to its outer extremity is of approximately the same length as the loop 2 from its terminal eyes to its outer extremity it is obvious that said intermediate eyes will be arranged at the center of the support when the latter is extended.

The intermediate eyes 3 are utilized for the attachment of a folding hanger 4, provided at its upper end with a suspending-ring 5 and preferably constructed of a single blank of wire of which the extremities have an interlocking and pivotal engagement with said intermediate eyes. In order that the hanger may be out of the way of the collar of a coat supported by the body portion of the device, I preferably arrange the legs of said hanger to converge upwardly and interlock or intertwist at a point in advance of the rear arms of the looped members, while the suspending ring is preferably arranged approximately in the vertical plane of the rear arms of said members. Contiguous to the twist 6, by which the said upwardly-convergent legs of the hanger are connected, is arranged a hook 7, of which the extremity is disposed approximately in the vertical plane of the front sides of the arms of the looped members. Obviously the intertwisting of the legs of the hanger at the under side of the hook serves to reinforce and stiffen the construction, the under side of the loop forming the hook being extended beyond the twist to form the front leg.

The looped members are tapered or reduced toward their inner or connected extremities, the sides of said loops being converged, and as the upwardly-convergent legs of the hanger serve to yieldingly resist the spreading of the legs of the loop 1 it is obvious that the loops are yieldingly held in their extended position, whereas when the loops are folded by adjusting them longitudinally with relation to each other the moment the terminal eyes of the loop 1 pass the enlarged portion of the loop 2 they are drawn toward each other by the contraction of the loop and of the legs of the hanger to arrange said eyes 1 contiguous to each other, and thereby hold the loops in their folded position. Furthermore, the width of the hanger is approximately equal to that of the contracted inner ends of the loops,

whereby when the members of the support are folded, as shown in Fig. 3, the hanger may be folded into the planes thereof and within the contour of the sides of the loops and parallel therewith to occupy the minimum space when not in use.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having described my invention, What I claim is- 1. A coat-support comprisinglooped oppositely-extending members, having their corresponding arms connected for relative sliding movement, one of the loops being provided at opposite points of its arms with eyes forming stops to limit the extension of the members, and a foldable hanger connected with said eyes, substantially as specified.

2. A coat-support havinglooped oppositelyextending members of diiterent lengths, of which the arms are connected for relative sliding movement, the arms of the longer loop being provided with intermediate stops to limit the extension of the members, and a hanger for centrally supporting the members, substantially as specified.

3. A coat-support having looped oppositelyextending members of dilferent lengths, of which the arms are connected for relative longitudinal sliding movement, the arms of the longer loop being provided with intermediate eyes forming stops to limit the extension of the members, and a hanger having an interlocking connection with said intermediate eyes, substantially as specified.

4. A coat-support having relatively adjustable members, each having front and rear sides connected at their remote ends to form a loop, the corresponding sides of the loops being mounted upon each other for relative sliding movement, and the sides of said loops diverging from their contiguous toward their remote or connected ends,a-nd havinga spring tendency toward each other at their contiguous ends, to frictionally maintain the members in their adjusted positions, and a hanger foldably connected with the front and rear sides of one of the members, substantially as specified.

5. A coat-support having looped in wardlytapered oppositely-extending members, each provided with terminal eyes fitted to slide upon the sides of the other member, one loop being longer than the other to adapt its terminal eyes to extend to the outer enlarged end of the other member, and having an inward spring tendency to provide for contraction and engagement with said enlarged outer extremity of the other member, and a hanger for centrally supporting the members, substantially as specified.

6. A coat-support having looped inwardlytapered oppositely-extending members, each terminally provided with eyes to fit slidingly upon the sides of the other loop, and a hanger having a supporting-ring and downwardlydivergent legs foldably engaged with the arms of one of the looped members, the rear leg being forwardly inclined to arrange it in front of the plane of the rear arms of the members, substantially as specified.

7. Acoat-supporthavingloopedoppositelyextending members slidingly connected for relative longitudinal adjustment, and a hanger having a supporting-ring arranged approximately in the vertical plane of the rear arms of the looped members, legs foldably connected respectively to the arms of one of the members, and having interlocking connection above the plane of the members, and an intermediate hat-hook arranged at its extremity approximately in the vertical plane of the front arms of the members, substantially as specified.
