UNrTs STATES V HENRY P. GEHRICKE OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
STRAP-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming-part of Letters Patent No. 665,204, dated January 1, 1901.
Application filed September 29, 1900. Serial No. 31.544. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY P. GEHRIOKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State ofOalifornia, have invented newand useful Improvements in Strap-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for locking adjustable straps which are used in pairs, such as the straps which are used on telescopic bags and trunks to hold the parts together; and the object thereof is to provide a locking device whereby such straps may be securely locked upon the bag or other article to which they are usually affixed, and thereby prevent it from being opened without the straps being first unlocked. I accomplish this object by the device described herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a telescope-bag the retaining-straps on which are locked thereon by my locking device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of apart of the locking device detached from the bag.
In the drawings, A represents the telescopebag, whose parts are held securely together by straps B, which are buckled thereon in the usual manner and are securely locked thereon by strap-lock C and padlock I. Straplock 0 is composed of a wire base D, which is bent near each end into a flattened coil E, through which straps B pass to hold them to- The ends are then bent upward and then toward each other to form strap-holding points F. The two wire members G, having eyes H and H at the ends thereof, are coiled around base D, each of said members G having a single coil around base D near each end thereof, as shown, and having a sliding movement on base D and having each end thereof bent upwardly at substantially right angles to the base and the inner ends thereof projecting past each other and are of such length that when eyes H are brought together eyes H pass overpoints F. 1
In the use of my device straps B are passed throughcoils E and are then securely buckled on bag A in the usual manner, with coil E near the buckle on strap B. The projecting free ends of straps B are then slipped upon points F. Members G are then moved to bring eyes H over said points and eyes H together in the center of the base. The hasp of padlock I is then passed through eyes H and the padlock is locked in the usual manner, which holds eyes H together, thereby retaining straps B on points F and preventing their removal from the bag until padlock I is unlocked.
It is obvious that instead of wire being used in the formation of my strap-lock strips of steel or other metal may be used and that coil E may be omitted and other means used for fastening the strap to the base, and the sliding members may be attached to the base in any suitable manner, and I do not restrict myself to the use of wire, my invention being a locking device composed of a base, having strap-retaining points at the ends and means to attach two straps thereto, and two sliding members slidably mounted on said base, whose outer ends are adapted to hold the strap on the strap-retaining points of the base and the inner ends to be locked logether to prevent the outer ends from moving, and thereby prevent the straps being removed from the retaining-points of the base- Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A strap-lock, comprising a base having catches on each end thereof for holding the free end of a strap, the projecting ends of said catches adapled to enter an opening on removal of the straps from the catches while the sliding members are in their extended or looking position, and to prevent their removal in their closed, orunlocked, position; two sliding members on'said base having on their ends, apertures adapted to receive, on their outer ends, the projecting end of the catch when in its extended or looking position; the apertures on the inner end of said sliding members adapted'to receive the hasp of a padlock in the locking position, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of two straps, adapted to be buckled upon a bag,'with a locking device composed of a base, having catches at the ends thereof; two sliding members on said base, having upturned ends, the inner ends adapted to be locked together, and the 5 sliding members in said base, to prevent the T outer ends to fasten the ends of the straps on the catches of the base.
3. A strap-lock, comprising a Wire base, the said Wire base being bent at the ends, as shown, to form a loop to receive the bindingstraps; sliding wires bent around the basewire, as shown, and adapted to move l0ngitudinally on said base-Wire, the said sliding wires being bent at both ends, one end form- To ing a loop to receive the inwardly-projecting ends of the base-wire, and the other bentinto a loop to receive the ha-sp of a lock, substantially as shown and described.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto su bscribed my name, this 22d day of :5
September, 1900, at Los Angeles, California.
H. P. GEHRIOKE. Witnesses:
