Description

no. 665,153., Patented Ian. I, I901.
' A. L". WHITE.
TUBL HANDLE. (Application amm 1a, 1900.
(llodeL) A TTOHNE rs UNITED STATES PATENT OFEIcE.
ANTRIM L. WHITE, OF SPRINGVILLE, IOWA.
TOOL-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 665,153, dated January 1, 1901.
Application filed May 15, 1900. Serial N0- 16,'771. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTRIM L. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Springville, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Tool, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a tool of that class resembling hammers, hatchets, and like instruments to which a handle may be conveniently and securely attached and which also will not be so liable to breakage of the handle due to the use of the tool.
This specification is the disclosure of one form of the invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the in- V vention, and Fig. 2 is a similar view taken on a line at right angles to that shown in Fig. 1.
The head a, of the tool may be of any desired form, and the tool may be either a hammer, a claw, a hatchet, ax, or other tool of the same character. The head is provided with an eye a, which is formed at its outer end with an enlarged portion a. In the eye is fitted a metallic tube 19, which is held in place by a metallic plug 0, having an enlarged outer portion or head 0 which fits in theenlarged portion a of the eye a. The hammer-head may be shrunk on the parts I) and c, if desired, and for further securing these parts a pin 0 is passed transversely through the head a, tube 1), and plug a. The tube b forms part of the handle of the tool, and in its outer end is fastened a wooden handpiece d, which is secured by a pin 01, arranged as shown.
Now it will be observed that the tube 12 is rigidly and inseparably secured to the tool, so that it can by no means be disconnected therefrom. The wooden handpiece (1 is secured in the tube and forms a part of the handle. This handpiece may be readily replaced when broken or worn out and always furnishes a convenient grasping-surface for the person using the tool.
Having thus described my invention, 1
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A tool having a head, a metallic tube engaged therewith, a plug forced into the tube and engaging the interior walls thereof to hold it in the head, and a handpiece fastened in the outer end of the tube, the tube and handpiece jointly forming the tool-handle.
2. A tool having a head with an eye, the
outer portion of which is enlarged, a metallic ANTRIM 'L. WHITE.
