' UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE o. cADv, or PINE BLUFF, ARKANSAS.
ATTACHMENT FOR SCREW-DRIVERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 664,624, dated December 25, 1900.
Application filed September 13, 1900. Serial No. 29,944. kNo model.)
To (0Z5 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE O. CADY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pine Blulf, in the county of Jefferson and State of Arkansas,'have invented an Attachment for Screw-Drivers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide an implement which is especially adapted for the purpose of holding the adjustment of a screw or bolt while the binding-nut is being turned thereon; and for this purpose the invention consists in the combination, with a screwdriver, of a winged collar loosely mounted on the shank or blade of said screw-driver, bits carried by the collar, and a spring bearing upon said collar to hold the bits .in engagement with the nut, whereby the screwdriver may serve to hold the adjustment of the screw or bolt and support the collar by which the 'nut is tightened.
The implement is particularly adapted for use in securing the adjustment of that class of bolts and nuts in which the threaded end of the bolt is provided with a transverse groove and the outer face of the nut grooved to receive the tool by which it is turned.
This style of bolt and nut is specially used in connection with telephoning apparatus, the bolt having an arm which is required to be adjusted and which arm cannot be conveniently held during such adjustment.
The following specification enters into a detail description of my invention, reference being had to the accompauyingdrawiugs, and F to letters of reference thereon, which indicate the different parts, and what I claim as new in the construction and combination is more specifically set forth in the appended claim.
In the drawings forming a part hereof, Figure 1 is a view showing the application of my invention. Fig. ,2 is a sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to said drawings, A designates the round shank of the screw-driver, a the flattened end or point, and a the handle, these parts being of the usual construction, with the exception that the round shank is provided with a shoulder a adjoining the ifiattened end forthe purpose of retaining the attachment upon .said shank.
In carrying out my invention I provide a collar 13, mounted upon the shank A and adapted to slide loosely thereon, the said collar being formed with extensions or wings b, by which it may be conveniently turned. The collar is provided at each side of its central opening with a vertical slot 19, and in said slots are secured blades or bits 0 0, disposed at opposite sides of the shank A, the said blades or bits being held in place by means of set-screws c. It will thus be seen that the screw-driver is located between the blades or bits 0, so that it may. engage the groove in the end of the bolt, while said bits may engage the grooves in the nut, as shown in Fig. 1.
Encircling the shank A is a helical spring D, one end of which engages the handle, so that the other end will bear upon the collar B and keep the bits in proper engagement with the nut, and thereby facilitate the operation of turning said nut.
In using the implement the bits 0 are placed in engagement with the grooves of the nut S and the screw-driver is forced against the pressure of the spring to bring the point into engagement with the groove in the end of the bolt S, after which the said screwdriver is turned to properly adjust the arm 8 of the bolt and firmly held while the collar is turned to tighten the nut. It will thus be seen that an accurate adjustment of the bolt or arm may be had by turning the screwdriver and such adjustment firmly held during the operation of tightening the nut, the screw-driver forming a support for the nuttightening device. The invention therefore provides an implement which will greatly facilitate the operation of adjusting the bolt and tightening the nut thereon and is of such construction that it can be easily manipulated.
The office of the spring D is merely to keep would reduce theioos-t of manufacture. It is preferred to have the bits connected fro the:
collar in the manner shown and described, for in addition to providing for the renewal of the bits provision is also made for adjusting said bits laterally to and from each otherto receive boltsof different sizes.
Having thus described my invention,what
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In an implement for the purpose set forth,
the corn' bina-t-ion with the screw-driver having a shoulder on its shank, of a collar loosely
