Be it known that I, ARTHUR H. BARTELT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Visconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in WVrenches, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
The present invention relates to tools and more particularly to a compound wrench for use in making the adjustment of an ordinary form of tappet valve.
This invention has for one of its objects to provide a tool for the purpose stated in which two wrenches are secured to a handle member in sidewise spaced relation and have means for adjusting both wrenches lengthwise and angularly with respect to the handle member.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a tool of the class described having a substantially elongated U-shaped handle member formed of spring metal whereby the ready adjustment of the space between the wrenches carried thereby may be had.
A further object of my invention is to pro vide a tool of the class and for the purpose described which will be readily adjustable and which will be capable ofwithstanding the strain to which a tool of this class is subjected.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the hereindisclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing I have illus trated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed ac cording to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the device together with a view of the adjusting portion of a tappet valve, parts being broken away and parts being shown in section.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device, and
Fig. 41 the bottom plan view of a portion of the device.
In Figure 2 I have illustrated a common form of tappet valve in connection with which my tool or wrench is to be used for adjusting the valve. This consists of a valve member having a head (not shown) and stem 5, a bearing sleeve 6, a tappet member 7 slidably and rotatively mounted in said sleeve, and carrying a round flat head (-not shown) for contact with a valve shaft cam (not shown), an adjusting screw 8 having threaded engagement with the upper end of the member 7' and a nut 9 securing the screw in adjusted position, the upper end of the member 7 also having flat faces 10 for receiving a wrench to hold the member 7 against turning movement when the valve is being adjusted. Tappet valves of this kind are set so that there will be a slight clearance between the end of the stem 5 and the head of the screw 8 when the lowest portion of the valve shaft cam is in contact githz the head on the lower end of the mem- Heretofore, it has been necessary for two persons to make the adjustment, each person having a wrench, one to engage the flat faces 10 of the member 7 and the other to engage the head of the screw 8, and then one of the persons uses another wrench to turn the lock-nut 9 to secure the parts in adjusted position. With the present device one person with one hand holds both the adjust ing screw 8 and the member 7, while with the other hand he may tighten the nut 9 by a wrench 11, partially shown in dotted line in Figure 2.
My device consists of a main elongated U-shaped handle 12 and wrenches 13 and 14, spaced apart from each other and adj ustably secured to the ends 15 and 16, respectively, of the handle 12. The wrench 14 is for engaging the flat faces 10 to hold the member 7 and is secured to the end 16 of the handle 12 by means of screw bolts 17 which pass through threaded apertures in handle end 16 and an elongated slot 18 extending through out the length of the shank 19 of said wrench and carrying binding nuts and washers 20 and 21, respectively, for clamping the wrench between them and the handle end 16. The wrench is thus adjustably secured it may be necessary to vary the distance be tween the wrench and handle 12,
The wrench 13 is for engaging the head of the screw 8 since the faces of the polygonal head of the screw will not always lie in the same plane with the faces 10 on the member 7 and since the relative sizes of the surfaces to be engaged difler, it is necessary to provide an adjustable connection between this wrench and the handle 15. This adjustable connection is provided by a'bolt 22 having a squared portion slidably mounted in a transverse slot 24- in the end of the handle side 15, and adjustable clamping wing nut mounted on the bolt serving to clamp the shank 26 of the wrench 13 between it and the handle end 15. The shank 2G is provided with an elongated slot 27 extending throughout substantially its entire length through which the bolt 22 passes. By this construction the wrench 13 may be extended from handle 15 or may be adjusted to vary the angle between it and the handle 15, the bolt 22 and its wing nut 25 locking the same in adjusted position.
The under face of the shank 26 of the tool 13 preferably rough so that the binding of the same against the handle arm 15 will suiiice to hold the tool 13 rigid with the handle. V
Often time it is necessary to vary the distan'ce between the wrenches 13 and 1 1 and for this purpose I preferably .form the handle 12 of spring metal whereby its ends 15 and 16 are normally urged apart, the same being held in proper spaced relation by means of a bolt 29 which has its head 30 engaging one side ofthe handle 12 and an adj ustable wing nut 31 engaging the other side, whereby the adjustment may. be readily made as will be obvious.
With this construction the operator adjusts the wrenches 13 and 1d the-proper distance in respect to each other to fit the particular make of valve so that the wrench 1 1 will lie in the plane of the faces 10 on the member 7 when the wrench 13 lies in the plane of the head of the screw 8. Thus it will be readily apparent that'I provide a small and efficient form of tool which may be readily adjusted to fit any make of valve adjustor.
' What I claim as my invention is:
1. A device of the class described comprising a handle member of resilient material and of substantially elongated U-shape, the side members thereof tending to spread apart, adjustable means for varying the space between the ends of said side members, a pair of wrenches, and means for securing said wrenches to saidrespective side members, for the purpose specified.
2. A device of the class described comprising a handle member of resilient material and of substantially elongated U-shape, the side members thereof tending to spread apart, adjustable means for varying the space between the ends of said side members,
a pair of wrenches, means to secure one of said wrenches to one of said side members, and means to secure the other of said wrenches to the other of said side members, said last mentioned means permitting adjustment of the adjacent Wrench relative to the other wrench, for the purpose specified.
A device of the class described. comprising a handle member of substantially e10ngated U-shape and a pair of sidewise spaced apart wrenches fixedly secured thereto, both said wrenches being adjustable lengthwise with respect to the handle member, and the sides of said U-shaped handle member being adjustable to vary the space between the wrenchesr j i 4-.
