To all whom it mcty concern.-

Be it known that 1, JAMES B. RYAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Corsets and the Like, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to corsets and other articles of personal apparel adjustable at the back or side of the body; and it consists in the peculiar and advantageous construction hereinafter described, and particularly point-- ed out in the claims appended, whereby the wearer of such articles is enabled to quickly and conveniently adjust, tighten, and fasten the same upon his or her body and whereby .the adjusting and fastening means may be readily lengthened or shortened either in whole or in part, so as to enable such means to properly fit a corset or two-part article of apparel to bodies of dilferent shapes and sizes.

Theinvention also consists in the peculiar and advantageous adjusting and fastening means which is susceptible of being placed on the market as an improved article of manufacture and readily applied to and used in conjunction with ordinary corsets and other two part or sectional articles of personal wear.

W'ith the foregoing in mind the invention will befully understood from the following description and claims when taken in con junction with the accompanying drawings, in whioh-- Figure 1 is a rear elevation of an ordinary twopart corset equipped with my improvements. Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 are detail elevations of modifications.

Referring by letter to the said drawings, and more particularly to Fig. 1 thereof, A A. are the sections of an ordinary two-part corset, which are provided adjacent to their rear edges with the usual vertical series of eyelets and l3 ii are the cords of my improved adjusting, tightening, and fastening means. These cords B are each passed loosely through opposite or complementary eyelets o, of the corset-sections A. and have their opposite ends connected to the rear ends of waist band or belt sections U D, which are normally located about midway of the height of the corset and are provided at their forward ends with suitable coaoting connecting devices such as illustrated. By virtue of this construction it will be observed that the user of a corset is enabled, after placing the corset on the body, to quickly and conveniently tighten and fasten the same, this bcing donc' by simply drawing the waistband or belt sections (3 D forwardly and connecting the forward ends of the same. It will also be'seen that when the belt-sections C D are drawn forwardly the rear edges of the sections A A are pulled together uniformly throughout the height of the corset and are flexibly connected together in such manner as to enable each of them to snugly conform to and properly fit the body, and, furthermore, that when the belt or beltsections are pressed upwardly the corset will be rendered. loose at its upper end and correspondingly tight at its lower end, while when the said belt-sections are pressed downwardly the opposite result will be accomplished.

The rear end of the waistband or belt section 0 is permanently connected to one end of each of the connecting-cords 15, while the rear end of the beltseotion D is detachably and adjustably connected to the opposite ends of the several cords, preferably through the mediuui of an ordinarysuspender-buckle E, secured on the section D, as shown in Fig. 1. This construction is advan tageousfirst, because it admits of the adjusting and fastening means being placed on the market as an article of manufacture and readily applied to corsets, shoulder-braces, and other two-part articles of wearing-apparel such as at present in use, and, second, because it permits of any one or more of the cords bein shortened to up slack thereof or to render one part of the corset or'other article tighter than the remainder thereof, as is sometimes desirable.
