REUBENW. KILLMER, OF FRAIKFORT, INDIANA.
UMBRELLA-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forminglpart of Letters Patent No. 664,15?, dated December 18, 190.
Application filed April 13, 1899.
To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, REUBEN W. KILLMER', a citizen of the United States, residing at Frankfort, in the county of Glinton, and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrellas; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a perspective View of an umbrella embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a detail view in section of a portion of such umbrella.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The object of my invention is to so construct the cover of an umbrellaJ that a flange or ledgewill be formed at the rim or edge thereof to prevent the dripping of water from the edge or rim; and to this end said invention consists in the umbrella constructed substantially as hereinafter specilied.
I am aware that others have proposed to provide umbrellas with iianges or ledges at the edges to catch the Water and enable its delivery or passage from the umbrellas to be controlled; but in each case with which I am acquainted the construction proposed necessitated the employment of a special supplemental frame for the iiange or ledge, an eX- pedient adding to the expense of the umbrella and to liability to its breakage or derangement.
In making my invention I have avoided the employment of a special frame and any change whatever in the usual umbrellaframe. l therefore employ an umbrella-frame of ordinary construction, on which is placed a cover A of any of the usual materials, the mode of attachment of the cover to the frame being preferably the customary mode. The edge of the portion of cover between adjacent ribs B and B is turned up and slightly inward to form a rim or liange a, running from one rib to the next, and the adjoining ends of such Serial No. 712,920. (No model.)
l turned-up portions which meet at the rib are attached together, as by sewing, so that the length of the upper edge of each rim is less than that of the lower edge, whereby when the umbrella is opened the rimbeing tightly drawn or under tension will be held or restrained from turning outward and downward. Preferably a small triangular piece is cut from the cover where the ends 0f two adjoining rims come together, so as to avoid any thickening or bunching at the place where the rims are joined as described and insure the desired relative length of the upper edge.
It will be seen that, with an umbrella provided around its edge with a rim or Harige, rain-water will be caught by the latter, and prevented from dripping oif at all points around the edge, as is possible with the ordinary form of umbrella, and when it is desired to get rid of the accumulated water this can be readily done by simply tilting the umbrella to cause the water to run off at one point.
Of course the rim or ange a need not eX- tend all of the way around the umbrella, but can, if preferred, be made to extend only part way around.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is An umbrella, having on its cover a self-sustaining rirn whose walls extend substantially in the same direction as .the umbrella-stick when the umbrella is opened and Whose perimeter is less at the free edge of the rim than at its base, whereby said rim is maintained in an upright position and is prevented from turning down over the edge of the umbrella, substantially as and for thepurpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 31st day of March, A. D. 1899.
