CHARLES GILMORE CHAMBERS, OF BROWNSVILLE, TENNESSEE.
COMBINED FUNNEL AND STRAINER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,834, dated November 16, 1897.
Serial No. 607,826. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:-
Be it known that I, CHARLES GILMORE CHAMBERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brownsville, in the county of Haywood and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Funnel and Strainer; and I do hereby declare the following .to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved funnel and strainer; and one object of my invention is the provision of a funnel and strainer which will be made entirely of glass, whereby the device may be used without fear of corrosion and will prove clean and pure for all purposes where such a device can be used.
' Another object of my invention is the provision of a combined funnel and strainer which will be of the simplest and cheapest possible construction, which can be readily taken apart for purposes of cleaning, and which will be thoroughly efficient and practical.
To attain the desired objects, the invention consists of a funnel and strainer embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view of a funnel and strainer constructed in accordance with and embodyingmy invention. Fig. 2 represents a similar view of a modified construction. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view showing the construction of the guiding cleat and tongue to connect the funnel-sections and permit adjustment of the inner section, the sections being enlarged to fully illustrate them.
In the drawings, A designates the funnel proper, which is of the usual shape and is made of glass, with the reinforcing bead or flange B at the upper edge and at its lower portion formed with the shoulder O and the threaded ring or band DJ Connected with said threaded end is the strainercarrying cap E, having the thread F for engaging the threaded ring,the rim G to snugly fit the shoulder on the funnel, and further provided with the internal flange H, upon which rests the strainer or gauze material J. From this construction it will be seen that the strainer-carrying cap screws upon the threaded ring of the funnel and that the strainer is held rigidly in place by said threaded ring and the internal flange of the cap.
In the modification of my invention I provide the funnel with a supplemental or additional section K, by means of which the funnel may be enlarged to any desired size, and to hold the sections properly I provide the slot or groove L, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. From this construction it will be seen that the inner funnel-section may be adjusted and retained from movement or detachment by means of the cleat, with bayonet-slot and the tongue fitting said slot in the section K, with which engages the lug L on-the section A, and by this construction it will be seen that I provide an efiective connection and a funnel which can be adjusted to hold any required quantity of material and thus make one funnel answer for all purposes.
I prefer to make my device entirely of glass;
but I would have it understood that it may be made of metal or other material without departing from my invention.
1 claim- 1. A combined funnel and strainer consisting of the outer flaring funnel portion having a shoulder at its lower portion formed with a lug at the upper edge and terminating in a threaded rim, a cap having its upper portion fitting against said shoulder, having threads to engage the threads of the band and provided with an interior intermediate flange, and a strainer resting on said flange and retained thereon by the threaded rim of the funnel and the inner funnel-section having a channel to receive the lug on the outer section.
2. A funnel consisting of a funnel-shaped section provided on one side with a lug and a funnel-section within said first-named section having a groove to receive said lug to permit the inner section to be adjusted to change the capacity of the funnel.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES GILMORE CHAMBERS.
