IMPROVEMENT IN FILTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 40,620, dated November 17, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. HALsTED,
of the city of Troy, county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, haveinvented a new and improved walter-filter for hydrants or other places where the same may or can be used; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofthe same,
reference being hereby had to the-annexed drawings, making a part of this specification. Like letters represent and refer to like or corresponding parts.
Figure 1 is an external view of the wat' rfilter,7 hereinafter,described. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the center ot'said waterlter, hereinafter described. Fig. 3 shows` the strainer division between the upper and middle chamber, hereinafter described and set forth.. Fig. 4 shows the cloth-filter division between the middle and lower chamber, hereinafter described and set forth.
The nature of' my invention consists in the combination of several chambers, straiuers, and cloth-filler divisions for the purpose of cleansing water or filtering the same at .the hydrant or hydrant-pipe while said water is passing therefrom.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention relates to manufacture and use the same, 1 will here proceed to give the construction and operation thereof, which is as follows-to wit:
I construct the several divisions or parts, hereinafter named, of any material which will answer the purpose desired. A, Fig. 2, is the upper section ofA said filter, and G the chamber therein and upper chamber of said filter. b b are wire supporters extending at right angles from the center of the lower part of said upper chamber, across the same, Aand resting between the said upper section, A, and the upper part ot' the middle section, B. Upon these supports rests the wire sieve or strainer c, as seen at Figs. 2 and 3. Upon the top of said sieve or strainer is the cup F, Figs. 2 and 3. This cup is for the purpose of breaking or checking the force or pressure of the water as it enters the said chamber G, through the water-pipe attached thereto, by means of a screw, as seen at E, Fig. 2, so as to prevent any injury to any part of said water-filter. This vcup is made less in diameter than the diameter of the chamber G, whereby the water runs over the same, and then through said strainer c into the intermediate chamber, H. The said upper section, A, and middle section, B, are fastened together by means of nut and screw, between which sections there is a piece of rubber, a, Figs. 1 and 2, for the purpose of making a watertight joint. The saidintermediatechamber, H, is filled with ashestus, through which the water passes in its passage into the lower chamber, I, in the lower section, C, Figs. 1 and 2. The said asbestus rests upon a cloth sieve or strainer. (Seen at e c, Figs. 2 and 4.) This sieve of cloth rests upon wire supports running at right angles crosswise of the same, as seen at d d,.Figs. 2 and 4, and is thele firmly secured by means ot' the lower edge of the middle section, B, and the upper edge of the lower section C, which are firmly fastened together by means ot' the nut and screwff, Figs. 1 and 2.
