IMPROVEMENT IN APPARTUS FOR HEATING AND PURIFYING FEED-WATER FCB. STEAM- GENERATORS.

Be it known that I, J. S. HOOTON, of New Carlisle, Indiana, have inventedcertnin ncrv and useful Improvements in Feed-Water Heaters and Pampers for Steam-Boilers; und I'dcliereby declare the follnwing to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is @perspective view of my apparatus, and

Figure 2 isa central verticnl'section of the seme.

Fig. 1 represents enl upright'tubulerstrueture, of any desired size, intended to receive water from the top pipe J andsteam from theibottom pipe F simultaneously. v

In fig. 2, J represents the receiving-pipe for cold water, and l 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 are o series of shelves or plates overlapping each other, substantially as set forth, :md secured to me by Letters Patent nfdnte of March 5, 1861, and as an improvement upon which this is intended. i

My present improvement consists substantially in the addition of a filtering-case, C, which is connected with the condenser A. by the pipe L, and is provided with' a plete or shell", K, a 'delivery-spout, H, and a wastesp'ont, Gr. The shelf or plate K occupies any necessary portion of the dinineter of the ltering-czlse, and receives the water falling from the spout I, from whence it is distributed and ltered by means of and through any suitable material plncediu the bottom of the same for the pur-poseof freeing the water from'unyremaining impurities. The manholes a ct a a. apre placed opposite the alternate shelves, und are intended to aioi'd iincili`4 ties for cleaning the deposits'from thc plates :nx :z: m, as may be desired.

The lower portion of thc filtering-case C is lled with straw, or any fibrous or suitable nltterinl, and the opening under the plate K is provided with o canvas lor cloth strainer to remove any impurities remaining in the water intended for'the boiler.

Having thus fully described my said improvement, what I claim as my invention, ond desire to secure hy Letters Patent, is i 1. The combination ofthe man-holes a a a a a, shelves or plates 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8,a`ndithe structure or casing constructed and operating substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. The filtering-case C, elbow-ppe L, spouts G and H, in combination with the casing A and plates or shelves 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8, all arranged and operating in the manner substantially as herein set forth.
