UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CYRUS S. FARRAR, OF ROMEO, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT lN APPARATUS FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF SALT.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38.893, dated June 16, 1am; antedated February 27, 1863.
I0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OYRUs S. FARRAR, of Romeo, county of Macomb and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for the Manufacture of Salt from Brine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in so constructing and arranging several vats, together with their heating device and other appurtenances, as to economize fuel and labor and improve the quality of salt.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I \vill'proceed to describe its construction and operation.
It consists of the vats A, B, and O. The first one, being made deeper than the others, is designed as a supply-vat, from which the flow of brine to the others is regulated by means of a gage-cock. The second vat is for settling the impurities in the brine, which color the salt. It is constructed with partitions H H H, running to and from thefire-loox F and smoke-pipe G parallel with each other. The brine flows into the first division, next the fire-box, is brought to the boiling-point, passes through the first partition at the opposite end, Where its temperature is below the boilingpoint, allowing the sediment to settle, is returned by the next partition to be reheated,
and so on, the partitions being open at alternate ends. It is retained in this vat until it is brought to the saturation-point, when it is discharged into the crystallizing-vat G, where r salt, which is placed on the grates D D, where it drains and is steamed by means of the steampipes M M, the steam to be taken from aboiler. The salt is thrown into the bins E E by inverting the grates. The smoke pipes or fines from each fire-box are returned with a single turn to the chimney N, for the convenience of cleaning, also to insure a good draft.
TVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Too improved arrangement of the vats A, B, and G, constructed and operated substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth and described.
2. The grates D D, in connection with the steam-pipes M M, as set forth and described.
' CYRUS S. FARRAR.
