Description

A. A. SAW|N. Evaporator fo'r Sacharine Juices.
Patented Aug 2, 1854..
N. PET ERS. PhoQo-Lilhographer. wminmm n.c.
UNITED STATES A. A. SAWIN, OF WEST IRVING, IOWA.
IMPROVED EVAPORATOR FOR SACYCHARINE JUICES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patcnt No. 3,111 5, dated August 2, 1864.
To a whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, A. A. SAWIN, of West Irving, in the county of Tama and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Apparatus for Evaporating Saccharine Juices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable any person skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference'being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side sectional View of my invention, taken in the line 00 m, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a plan or top View of the same; Fig. 3, a trans verse vertical section of the same, taken in the lineg y, Fig. 2; Fig. 4 detached view of a partition pertaining to the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to the employment or use of side pans or boilers with a main pan, all arranged in connection with a furnace, return-fines, dampers, gates and other concomitant parts, as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby a very desirable and efficient device is obtained for the purpose of evaporating saccharine juices.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a furnace, which may be constructed of sheet metal or masonry, B being the fire-grate; O, the main flue; D D, returnflues, and E E sockets or thimbles which re ceive the smoke-pipes.
F represents dampers at the back parts of the return-fines, by which communication may be made between the main flue C and the return-flues D D, or said communication cut off when desired. The return-flues D D are formed by two longitudinal partitions, a a. (Shown in Fig. 3.) On the top of this furnace A the evaporating device is placed. This is constructed of planksof a suitable thickness, and so as to form a rectangular box, G, which isdivided into seven compartment-s,
three of which, I) b 12, comprise the main" evaporating-pans; two, 0 c, the side pans, and two, (I d, straining-compartments. The box G is provided with a sheet-metal bottom, H, and the partitions e are of plank.-
The furnace A, as well as the box G, may be of any suitable dimensions. The com-' cets employed for that purpose.
I) b b are directly over the main with each. other by means of gates f, of sheet metal. The front compartment, b,commun1cates with the strainpartmen ts flue, and communicate ,er-compartment d of the side pan 0 by means 7 of a spout, g, the strainer h being of perforated metal or any fabric which will admit of the juice passing through it and strain or filter the same. The side pans, c 0, are over the return-flues D D, and the back compartment,
b, communicates with the strainer-compartment d of the side pan 0 by a spout, 9. The strainer i of the compartment d may be precisely like h, and inclined, if desired. Both of thestrainer-chambers communicate with the side pans, c c'one with each and the former have wooden bottoms j, which are some distance above the bottoms of c c, as shown in Fig. 3, and by dotted lines in Fig. 1. The bottoms of the side pans, c c, are of semicircular form in their transverse section, as shown clearly in Fig. 3, and one of them is provided with a faucet, I, and the other with a discharge-opening, J, at one end.
In the side pan 0 there are placed two partitions, K K, which may be of wood, and rounded at their lower ends to conform to the shape of the bottoms of said side pan. The lower edges of K are notched or have recesses made in them, to admit of communica tion being formed between the compartments of 0. By this arrangement it will be seen that I obtain a large heating-surface, the side pans, c 0, being an additional feature, they not being, so far as I am aware, used in any other sugar-evaporating device; and it will be seen that heat may, by means of the dampers F, be cut off from either or both of the side pans, c a.
At each end of the box Gthere is suspended a vessel, L, designed for receiving the skimmings taken off during the evaporating pro cess.
lVI represents what may be termed a sinker or dumb-waiter, which is designed, by immersing it in, the side pans, cc, to raise the fluid therein, and admit of its discharge therefrom through the desired spouts or fau- This sinker may be constructed of sheet metal filled with any suitable heavy material.
I would remark to the two side pans, .c c. to advantage.
that I do not confine myself One maybe used The partitions K K'serve to keep up a proper circulation of the juice in c and ad- 'mit of the portion of the juice at the center of the pan being kept in a warm state sufficiently so to skim and be discharged into I).
It will be seen that all desirable and necessary communication is obtained between the several compartments, so that the juice may,
as is required in the evaporating process, be transferred from one compartment "to the other, and also strained.
Any desired number of strainers may be used.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is+
1. The employment or use, in a sugar evaporating pan, of side pans, c 0, one or more, arranged in connection with returnflues D D of a furnace, provided with suitable dampers, F, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The movable partitions K K0.ne or more arranged ,in the side pan 0, and notched at their lower ends, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The sinker 0r dumb-Waiter Mone or more-When used in connection with a sugarevaporating pan, for the purpose herein set forth.
4. The scum receptacles or vessels L, placed at each end of the box. G, as set forth.
