FILTER ATTACI-IMENT FOR FAUCETS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,263, dated July 1, 1856.
provement. Fig. 2, is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3, is a detached plan or top view of the perforated plate which is placed over the filtering material. Fig. 4, is a detached inverted plan of the bars on which the filtering material rests. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to a new and improved filter to be applied to faucets.
The invention consist-s in having the faucet provided with two cocks or valves,
with a chamber between them, the chamber being divided into two compartments by the filtering material and the plate and bars between which the filtering material is fitted or placed. The water pipe communicating with the lower compartment, as will be hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby the filtering material may be kept perfectly clean and the water drawn from the faucet in a filtered or unfiltered state, as desired.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents the body or shell of the filter, which may be constructed of either of the metals now used for such purposes. The body or shell A, is formed of a chamber B, having a curved pipe C, attached to its upper end, which pipe is provided with a cock or valve D. The lower end of the chamber B, has a pipe E, attached to it, which cock is provided with a cook or valve F. \Vithin the chamber B at about its center, there is placed a ring, a, having bars 6, fitted with in it. The upper surfaces of these bars are knife-edged and they branch or radiate from one side of the ring, or they may be described as being placed in the ring in fanform, as shown clearly in Fig. 4. The lower edges of the bars are of convex form, longitudinally, as shown in Fig. 2, the upper edges being horizontal. The ring and bars may be cast in one piece and the ring rests upon a shoulder 0, on the inner side of the chamber B.
G, represents the filtering medium which may be formed of a piece of felt, Canton flannel, or any proper material. The filtering material is placed upon the bars I), and a perforated metal plate H, is placed upon it, said plate being kept in proper position by the lower edges of the cap (l, which forms the upper part of the chamber B, and is screwed into the lower part of the chamber B, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The filtering material, G, ring and bars, a, Z), and perforated plate H, divide the chamber B into two compartments, c, f.
I, represents the water pipe which communicates with the lower compartment, f, just below the bars 5, and the ring a, is so fitted in the chamber B, that the converging ends of the bars 6, will be over the orifice of the pipe I.
When the lower cock or valve F, is closed and the upper cock D, is open, the water being under pressure will pass into the lower compartment 7, up through the filtering material G,'and out through the pipe C, but, when the cock D, is closed and the cock F, is open, the water will pass out through the pipe E. In the former case, the water will, of course, be filtered, and in the latter case, it will not. Q
There are many cases in which it is not necessary to have filtered water, and as the flow of the water is considerably impeded by the filtering material, much time will be saved in drawing it from the cock F. The filtering material is kept clean'by means of the bars 6 which direct the water from the pipe I, over the whole under surface of the filtering material, and by closing the cock D, and opening the cock F, the water, as before stated, will escape through the pipe E.

Having thus described my invention, wha I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Placing the filtering material or medium, G, within the chamber B, of the faucet and above the pipe I, and having a pipe, C, and cook, D, at the upper end of the chamber and a pipe, E, and cook, F, at its lower end, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
2. I also claim placing the filtering material or medium, G, upon the bars 6, arranged as shown forthe purpose specified.
