I. B. EDINGTON.
UMBRELLA.
No. 388,852. Patente d Sept. 4, 1888.
Miin'esses Invenior.
J? wwm/ @615. 711mm,,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC B. EDINGTON, OF \VATERLOO, NEYV YORK, ASSIGNOlt OF ()NPHIALF TO G. SELMSER & SON, OF SAME PLACE.
UMBRELLA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,852, dated September 4, 1888.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
ie it known that I, ISAAC B. EDINGTON, a citizen of the United States of America, rcsiding at \Vaterloo, in the county of Seneca and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella- Framcs. of which the following is aspecification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in umbrella and parasol frames in which one end of the ribs and braces is provided with a rounded ball-shaped journal to connect them to the upper collar or to the runner; and the objects of my improvement are to provide novel means for securing together the parts constituting the said upper collar and the runner of an umbrellaframe. l attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a part of an unr brella'framc constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is asideview of the upper collar of the frame carrying the inner end of two of the ribs. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of said collar. Fig. 4 is aside view of the runner carrying the inner end of two of the braces. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of said runner. Fig. (i is a side view of the inner end of one of the ribs or of one of the braces. Fig. 7 is a top perspective view of the upper plate of the rib-holding collar. Fig. 8 is a bottom perspective view of the brace-h0lding under plate, forming a part of the runner.
In said drawings, A represents an umbrella stick, to which the upper collar, B, is fitted and secured by means of a small nail or by means ofindentations formed thereon. This collar has a broad circumferential flange, B", in which is formed a circular groove or a series of pockets, 6, and a corresponding series of radial notches, b, cut in its edge for the reception of the inner end of an equal number of ribs, C. Said inner end is in the form of a rounded ball shaped journal, 0, that is received into the pockets b, and has a narrower neck, 0', of such size as to pass looselythrough the radial notches b. To retain the inner end of the ribs in their respective pockets in the flange B the tubular part of the collar B has projecting from its periphery two segmental screw-threads, If, the under side of which is inelined toward the top of the flange B and after all the ribs have been inserted in the pockets of said flange a centrallyperlorated plate, D, internally cut away at two opposite points, (6, is passed over the upper end of the collar B and presses down until it is under the level of the segmental serew-threads b It is then given nearly a quarterrevolution, and while riding under said segmental inclined surfaces becomes firmly seated over the flange B and over the ball-shaped journals at the inner end of the ribs and requires but an instant for the operation.
To prevent the accidental displacement of the plates, a screw, d may be made to pass vertically therethrough and into the llange B".
To retain the inner end of the braces Econnected to the runner F, the upper end of said runner is provided with a flange, I)", in the under side of which is formed a circular groove or a series of pockets, 1), and notches If, as heretofore described, and a short distance under said flange the runner has two pins or lugs,f, diametrically projecting from its sides to support and retain a centrally-perforated plate, D This plate is to inelose the ball-shaped inner ends of the braces I It is cut away at d for the passage of the radial 8s lugs j, and is provided with two segmental lugs, d, having an inclined surface adapted to ride upon the lugs to bring it forciblyagainst the flange B of the runner.
Having now fullydescribcd my invention, I 8 claim- 1. In combination with the ballshapcd inner ends of the ribs of an umbrella and the upper collar, B, provided with a recessed flange, B", and two segmental screw-threads, the perforated plate I), internally cut away at two points, d, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In combination with the bill-shaped inner ends of the braces of an umbrella and the runner F, provided with a recessed flange and radial lugs f, the perforated plate D internally cut away at d and provided with segmental lugs d, having an inclined surface, substantially as and for the purpose described. IOO
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC B. EDINGTON.
