IMPROVEMENT IN SMOKE-STACKS.

which will enable others skilled in the art to make= and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part 'of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation, partly in section, of my improved sectional smoke-stack.

. This invention rrelates to a cast-iron smoke-stack for stationary machinery, and has for its object to so construct the saine thatit can beconveniently packed and transported in small bulk.
The invention consists in making the smoke-stack in sections, so thatitcan he taken apart and put together at will, and so that it will be strong, tight, and reliable when put together.
lhe smoke-stack A is made sectional, in series of vertical and horizontal pieces.
Vertically it is divided into four, more or less, divisions, a, b, c, and d, and each vertical division again into four, more or less, pieces, 1, 2, 3, and 4.
The chimney rests on a base, B, of metal or otherl material.
From the base projects au upright flange, e, with a bead, f, at its upper end.
The pieces ofthe lower section a are at their lower ends grooved on the inner faces, and are placed against the outer side ofthe flange e, so that the bead f en ters their grooves.
When the four parts ofgthe section a have been applied, they inclose or embrace the4 flange e entirely, and constitute a slightly conical tube. They are held together by a ring, O, vwhich is slipped over them.
The upper end of the section c is beaded like theflange e, to receive in a similar way the grooved `lower ends of the pieces constituting the section b. These are held together by a ring, D.
The pieces of the section c are then placed upon b, which has a bead,j, and are held by a ring, E.
The pieces of the section d are in a similar Wayput upon c, and held by a ring, F.
A ring, G, holds the pieces of the section d together` on top. l Y
Thus the smoke-stack is composed'o' a series of sec# tions, which can be easily taken apart and put together. 'lhe lower part of each section -overlapping the upper end ofthe section below serves to produce a tight joint.
The joints between the several pieces-1 2 3 4 of each section are held tight by inner or outer projections g g on the saine, respectively, as shown in fig. 2.
It is evident that, instead .of the low-er end of each section fitting around the upper end ofthe one below, the upper ends of thelower sections mayembrace the lower ends oi' the upper.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A portable smoke-stack, composed 0f vertical secn tions, which are made in separate pieces and held together by rings, as set forth.
