IMPROVEMENT IN CAN-COVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,602,dated May 5, 1874; application filed August 6, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. PALMER, of Leonardsville, in the county of Madison and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers or Tops for Gans, 85o., and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of covers for cans which have a hoop to iit inside of the mouth or neck of the can 5 and it consists in the means employed for contracting and expanding the cover-hoop.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the saine, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which the two iigures represent vertical sections of a can mouth or neck with my improved cover placed thereon.
A represents the mouth or neck of a can; and B is the cover thereto, provided with a hoop, C, to t into-the mouth A. This hoop is left loose atl/the joint a., and on the inner side of tlerhoopmn each side of the joint, is

It` will readily be seen that by pulling up the frameD the hoop C is contracted, while by pushing` it down the hoopis expanded; and hence the cover can be made as tight as desired after being placed in the can, and still it may be removed with perfect ease.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Y The combination of the cover-hoop O, made loose at the joint, and provided with eyes or loops b b, and the wedge-shaped frame D, with shank f and knob Gr, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
