. HAlR-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 662,949, dated December 4, 19cc.
Application filed September 7, 1900- Serial No. 29,271. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENEDICT B. LEDERER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented acertain new and useful Improvement in Hair Clasps or Brooches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to that class of hair ornaments and brooches which are retained in place by means of pin-tongues, and particularly to those pins having a body or face composed of frangible material, such as pearl, celluloid, horn, &c.
The clasps now in use resemble ordinary brooch-pins, and their structure presents numerous projections and interstices whereby the hair is accidentally engaged, torn, and tangled.
My device has for its object the correction of these evils; and to that end it consistsin the novel construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is aback elevation of my new clasp; Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section of the same on line a: m, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a transverse section of the same on line z c, Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a plan of the inclosing shell; Fig. 5, a plan of the shell with pin-tongue engaged; Fig. 6, a like view with inserted spring, and Fig. 7 a plan of the completed pin and joint ready for attachment to the clasp-body.
In the drawings like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout.
The construction of my pin is as follows: A clasp-body A of any desired design or material is selected, but preferably of pearl, which-is transversely pierced in three places a a a for the insertion of pins. The pin and joint parts are next constructed and assembled as follows: An inclosing shell 0 is struck up out of thin metal, having its bottom pierced with two small holes a and a rectangular opening d, the latter flanked by rectangular depressions e on either side to form a bearing for the end of the pin-tongue. pronounced depressions b b, stamped herein, are found to facilitate the action of the parts. The pin-tongue B consists of a broad body with an abruptly tapering point i, pierced Other less with a hole 0, having a T-shaped end on, rec tangular in cross-section, which serves asan' axis forthe pin-tongue. The pin-tongue member is next engaged with the inclosing shell,
ing in the bearings e. A flat spring a is next laid overthe parts thus assembled, Fig. 6, and the upright wall of the inclosing shell 0 is rolled over inwardly and bears upon the face of the spring, thus retaining the latter in place, Fig. 7. The parts thus assembled are attached to the clasp-body thus: The inclosing shell 0-, with its attached parts, is placed upon a convenient part of the clasp-body A. Plus 9' are passed through the openings at of the body A and the openings 0 of the shell 0, with their heads 3 abutting upon the clasp-body and their ends projecting slightly above the shell 0. Over each of these projecting pin ends is applied a small tube 25, which is united with the pin projection by solder dropped into the annular space between the tube and pin. I next pass a file across the exposed ends of the tubes and pins to bring them more nearly flush with the inclosing shell.
The point of the pin-tongue is protected from lateral displacement by'a pin 1) passing through the openings a of the body and 0 of the pin -tongue and held in position by the washer w.
The clasp thus constructed presents no obnoxious projections, relieves a delicate body or face of all strain, and has a positive tongue action.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hair clasp or brooch, consisting of a body, an inclosing shell with rectangular bearings, a pin-tongue having a T-shaped base rectangular in c'rosssection mounted in said bearings, a pin projecting from the back of the clasp-body adapted to register with an opening in the pin-tongue, the said shell inclosing the bearing and pivot of the tongue, as set forth.
2. In a hair clasp or brooch, the'combination of a body, an inclosing case attached to .said' body, a pin-tongue capable of positive action mounted in hearings in said case, a pin projecting from the back of the clasp-body and adapted to register with an opening in as shown in Fig. 5, with its axial end m rest-' the pin-tongue, and tubes inelosing the pins pivot of the pin and held by'said shell, all 10 which secure the case to the body, as and for substantially as shown and described.
the purpose specified. In testimony whereof I have affixed my sig- 3. The hairclasp or brooch herein described nature in presence of two witnesses. 5 consisting of a body of frangible material, an
inclosing shell attached to said body, pins for I BENEDICT LEDERER' securing said parts together, tubes inclosing Witnesses: said pins, a pin-tongue mounted in bearings WILLARD U. LANSING, Within said shell, and aspring placed over the HORATIO E. BEL LOWS.
