Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, J AMES A. DORAN and JAMES C. DORAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful.Improvements in Badges, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

Our invention relates to badges, and has for its ends, primarily, a facile, cheap, and practical means of displaying such legends as it is customary to periodically change.

The invention consists in the novel construotion and combination of parts herein.- after set forth, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, Wherein- Figure 1 is a faceview of the novel badge; Fig. 2, a rear view of the same, showing the parts in locked or closed position; Fig. 3, a similar view showing the pivoted plate in open position with the legend-strip removed, and Fig. 4 a transverse central vertical section of the badge in closed position.

Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views.

Our badge comprises a body A, preferably of metal, provided with an opening B, whose margin upon the rear of the body is grooved or depressed to form a marginal seat or depression b. Upon the back of the body are the usual catch a, cup 0, and pin-tongue d.

A rivet or double-headed pin D traverses the upper part of the body A and a springarm 6, whereby the latter is frictionally held in contact with the body, but sufiiciently loose to allow a pivotal movement of the arm under pressure. The arm 6 is an extension upon a fiat plate E, whose outline corresponds in contour with the marginal seat I), wherein it registers when in normal position,

the rear surface of the plate E being flush- With the adjacent parts of the body A, whereby the plate is guarded against accidental lateral movement. The springy metal of which the arm 0 is composed serves to retain the plate E in its seat and presses the plate against a removable display or legend strip F, whose margin also rests in the seat I) beneath the plate.

When it is desired to remove the strip F, the finger is pressed against the face of said strip, forcing the plate E out of it's seat, and the plate is then swung to one side, as shown in Fig. 3, thereby permitting the strip F to be removed. A fresh legend strip is then placed in seat I) and the plate E returned to original position.

Having described our invention, what we claim is 1. In a badge the combination with the body provided with a depression, of a plate normally fitting in said depression, a springarm upon the plate, means for pivoting the arm to the body so as to swing in a plane parallel to the body, and a legend-strip in the depression intermediate the body and plate.

2. In a badge the combination with the body provided with an opening, of a marginal seat around the opening, a plate normally fitting in the seat, an arm upon the plate, means for pivoting the arm to the body so as to swing in a plane parallel to the body, and a legend-strip whose margin rests in the seat beneath the plate.

3. In a badge the combination with the body provided with an opening, of a marginal seat around the opening, a plate normally fitting in the seat, a spring-arm upon the plate, means for pivoting the arm to the body so as to swing in a plane parallel to the body, and a legend-strip resting in the seat beneath the plate.
