UNITED STATES PATENT Orricn.
ALFRED J. MANNING, OF 'IRVINGTON, NEW YORK;
.BATH-TUB.
ssscme em forming part of Letters latent No. 661,351, dated November 6, 1906. Application filed February 17, 1900. Serial Roi 5,631. (He model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED J. MANNING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Irv ington, in the county of Westchester and State 5 of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bath-Tubs, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to bath-tubs.
Heretofore bath-tubs equipped with shower in and needle spray attachments have been provided with housings or canopies to inclose said attachments, thus rendering the construction of a bath apparatus expensive as well as un Slightly. k
these objections and to provide a bath-tub with shower and needle spray attachments, the construction being such that the attachments are entirely concealed from view and room-space economized.
A further object of the invention is to provide a seat which will also serve as means for cconomizing the water and which when located in certain positions may also be used as a step for entering and leaving the tub.
.With these as well as other objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed. Y
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken through the wall of a room and showing the hollow spur '5 projected into a recess or alcove formed in the wall. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectionalview.
Figs. 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 are plan views of odifications of some of the various forms of'my device which in each case may in construction have the seat omitted from the spur, if it be so desired.
In the drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
1 denotes the bath-tub, which may be of 1 any well-known or approved construction, j with the exception that one or more of its walls is provided with what I will term a hollow spur 2; This spur may be of any suitable shape and may project from any of the walls of the body portion of the tub. I prefer to have the spur project into an alcove One object of this invention is to overcome or recess 3, formed in a wall of the room, and, if desired, the spur may be formed with-a seat 4, which in addition to serving as a seat will limitthewater'area to the usual bathtub contour. It is essential that thefrecess or alcove be of the same shape as the hollow spur, so that the latter may fit within the same and forin a water-tight joint therewith to prevent any water from splashing or being projected between the sides of the spur and the walls of the recess or alcove. Pipes 5 extend vertically and are embedded in the vertical walls of the alcove or recess 3 and are perforated todischarge a needle-spray through the side walls, of cess. A pipe 6 has an out-let 7, suitably ornamented, and is spray-head.
It is evident thata person in taking a-shower or needle spray bath mayseat himself orstand upon the seat 4, and owing to the fact that the spur is set back into the alcove or recess in a wall of the room the spray over and around the spur minimizes the splash outside the limits of the tub.
When it is not desired or convenient to place the spur of the tub into a recess or al cove in the wall of the room, a curtain may be provided to conceal the water-pipes and their attachments.
From the foregoing description, taken-in con nection with the accompanying dra wings the construction, operation, and advantages of my im roved bath-tub will be readily apparent without requiring aniextendedexplanation. It will be-seen thatthe tub is simpermits of its manufacture atsmall cost, and
purposes for which'it is designe 4 Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may he resorted to without departing from the principle or-sacrificingany of the advantages of this in vention. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to besecured byLetters Patent, is
1. The combination with a wall of a room provided with a recess or alcove. projecting beyond the floor-space of the room, of a bathtub abutting against said wall on opposite said alcove or 're provided with a shower-bath ple of construction, that said construction 9' v that it is exceedingly well 'ada ted for the 'provided with a recess sides of said alcove and provided. in its abutting side with a hollow spur projecting outwardly therefrom into said recess, said spur 3 beyond the floor-space of the room, of abathtub abutting against said Wall on opposite sides of said alcove and provided in its abutting side with a hollow spur projecting outi wardly therefrom into said recess, said spur or alcove projecting a i having a contour corresponding.' to the alcove E or recess to efiEect a water-tight joint and provided with a seat the uppersurface of which is above the bottom of the tub, perforated pipes 5 extending vertically and embedded in the wall of the alcove, and a pipe 6 having an outlet Tand shower-bath spray-head, subst-antially as described. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set- I my handjn the E witnesses. i ALFRED J. MANNING. i \Vitnesses:
