BATHING COMPARTMENT.
Application filed March 26, 1923. Serial No. 627,824.
JO ficing large spaces and entailing considerable expense. This is particularly important where the demand is for a room of moderate costs but with adequate appointments for comfort and sanitary convenience. In particular, travelers and transient guests do not demand the luxury in appointments which is the characteristic of hotel rooms of the better class.
Specifically myinvention seeks to provide in conjunction with a bed room, toilet and bath facilities so arranged as to provide'a maximum of comfort and convenience with a minimum of lost space and expense of installation. In carrying out my invention I 'have devised a compartment in which-are arranged a toilet seat or water closet and also the requisite facilities necessary, for shower baths.
It is one of the objects of my invention to provide these facilities capable of convenient independent use without the presence of either hampering the use of the other. In fact it has been found that the covered water closet is extremely useful and desirable as a seat during the use of the compartment for a shower bath. At the same timethe compartment is adapted'to be easily maintained in a cleanly condition.
Other advantages arising from my inven- 40 tion will be evident from the following description. For purposes of illustration I have shown in the drawings one form in which my invention may be embodied, it being evident that numerous changes in proportion and minor details may be carried out without departing from the scope of my invention.
In the drawings Fig. lis a plan view of a room embodying my invention, and
Fig. 2 is a vertical elevation taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. y
The room 3 as shown in the drawingsis designed to provide space for such articles of furniture as are necessary in a modest bed room fer the limited needs of a new eler or similar occupant. These articles of furniture have been schematically indicated by dotted lines merely for the purpose of showing the relation between them and the toilet compartment which is incorporated within the walls of the room. V
The compartment 4 is formed by the outer wall of the room and the two intersecting partitions 5 and 6, the latter having a door indicated diagrammatically at 7 A waterproof curtain 8 is adapted to be drawn across the opening of the door. The rear wall of the compartment 9 separates the compartment from the duct 10 which is adapted to carry the necessary plumbing and vents. This duct 10 is common to the two adjacent rooms 3.
The floor 11 of the compartment 4 contains a drain 12 to which point the different portions of the floor 11 slope gently. This'drain 12 as shown on Fig. 1 is much nearer the wall 5 thanthe wall 9 to cooperate with the shower attachment to be later described. This floor.
is preferably of tile or other water-proof construction customarily adapted for shower bath compartments. In like manner the inner surfaces of the walls ofthefcompartment are water-proof.
Mounted in the wall of the roomabove the drain 12 are faucets 13, 13 having a common outlet 14 to which is attached a flexible tube 15. This tube terminates in a spray nozzle 16adapted to be held in inverted position by a bracket 17 which in turn is mounted on the wall. The lengthof the tube 15 and the position of the bracket 17 are such that the spray may be projected from the wall bracket or may be used as a hand implement at the option of the bather. g
It will be noted that both the shower attachment and its drain arelocalized at one endof the compartment and directly opposite the curtain doorway. Thus there is provided sufficient space in which the bather may stand during the use of the shower.
Atthe opposite end of the compartment bath water. Also it frequently happens that the bather desires some sort of support during bathing. For example, if he desires a foot bath, the cover 19 lends itself readily as a water-proof seat. The position of the cover 19 is well adapted while the bather is seated on the cover to bring his feet above the drain and beneath the shower jet whether the same is operated from the wall bracket or by the hand of the bather. At the same time the cover 19 protects the seat of the water closet. If at a later time, it is intended to use the water closet. it will be found still in good condition and without having been affected by the use of the shower in the'same compartment. f
An arrangement such as has been abovedescribed is of evidentadvantage in the economical construction of rooms for hotels, rooming houses and the like. There is a minimum of space used but at the same time there is no sacrifice in utility and convenience.
Furthermore, the use of either the water closet fixture or the shower bath fixture is independent of the presence of the other. It is desired to point out however, that in the use of the showerbath fixture, the juxtaposition of the water-proof cover for the water closet to beused as a bathers seat, is a material advantage.
IVhile one form of this invention has been described and illustrated, nevertheless it is to be considered merely by way of example and not in any way limiting the invention beyond the scope of the appended claims.
'IVhat I claim is:
1. In a compartment, an apparatus therein delivering a bath shower over a portion of the area of the compartment, and a water closet fixture in the compartment having a flanged water-proof cover adapted to'b'e used 'asa b'athers seat.
2. In a compartment, an apparatus on one interior wall thereof, delivering a bath shower over a portion of the area of the compartment, adrain in the floor of the compare ment beneath the shower apparatus, and a shower over a portion of the area of the compartment, a drain'i'n-the floor of the compartanentbeneath the shower apparatus, and a water closet fixture in the compartment removed from the'normal path of the shower, said fixture having a fiai'iged water-proof cover adapted to be used as a bathersseat.
4:. In a compartment having a doorway in one wall, an apparatus in said compartment delivering'a bath'sho wer over a portion of the compartment immediately opposite the door, way, a drain in the floor of the compartment beneath the shower apparatus, and a water closet fixture in the compartment remote from the doorway and having a Waterproof cover adapted to be used as a bathers seat.
5. In a combination, a con'ipartment, a shower apparatus on one wall thereof, a drain in the floor of said compartment beneath the shower apparatus, a water-closet having a circumferentially flanged water-proof cover adjacent one wall of the compartment and spaced from saidj shower apparatus.
6; In combination, a compartment'having a-doorwayalong one of the side walls thereof, a shower apparatus on the other side wall and oppositethe doorway, a drain in the floor between the doorway and said apparatus, toward which drain the floor slopes, and a water closet arranged in said compartment at one'side' of said shower apparatus.
7., In a compartment, an apparatus therein delivering a bath shower over a portion of the area of the compartment, a water closet fix ture in the compartment removed from thenormal path of the shower and a cover hingedto said fixture and having a flange extending downwardly over the sides of the fixture.
8. In a compartment, an apparatus therein delivering a bath shower over a portionof the area ofthe compartment, a water closet fixture mounted on one wall of the compartment removedfrom the normal path of the shower,
a cover hinged to said fixtureandhaving a. flange extending downwardly over the sides of the fixture, and a drain in the floor of the compartment beneath the said apparatus and to whichfdrain' the floor slopes.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto af fixed my signature. a
E. R. BOYLE.
