UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
REBEOOA COYLE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
NURSING-GOWN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 660,843, dated October 30, 1900.
Application filed May 16, 1 900.
T0 atZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REBECOA OOYLE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Nursing-Gowns, which improvement is fully set forth in the followingspecification and accompanying drawings.
My invention copsists of a nursing-gown which is provided with an opening for the protrusion of the breast therethrough, the same being primarily covered by plaits on the garment, so that said opening when not in use is practically concealed and during nursing the breast is not materially exposed, the facing on the wall of said opening preventing the presentation of a harsh edge to the breast and also being adapted to be extended or folded out, so as to assist in covering the breast during nursing, should the relative plait fail to accomplish the same.
Figure 1 represents a front view of a nursing-gown embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a horizontal section on lineazw, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section of a portion thereof on an enlarged scale. Fig, 4 represents a horizontal section on line y y, Fig. 1. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a nursing-gown, which, excepting the feature of my invention applied thereto, is of usual formation. In the sides of the gown at the breast portions thereof are slits or openings B for the projection therethrough of the breast of the mother for the purpose of nursing. The fabric of the gown over said openings and the side portions thereof are gathered, forming plaits C, the side plaits being extended beyond the side walls of said openings, so that they cover the latter, while they also form the outer walls of the openings and Serial No. 16,832. (No model.)
are adapted to yield, so that the openings proper are accessible when required for use, said plaits, however, closing on portions of the breast, and thus preventing material exposure of the same while otherwise being concealed, the gown presenting the appearance of an ordinary plaited garment without indicating the existence of the openings be-- bind the same. The plaits are integral portions of the fabric of the front of the gown in which the openings exist, thus avoiding att-ached flaps or pieces and preserving the intact nature of the gown or garment. The outer walls of the plaits have facings D, which in the present case are turned-in pieces of said plaits, and opposite portions of the openings are closed by buttons, loops, hooks, eyes,
'or other suitable means, thus preventing the possible separation of the walls of the openings. The facings D present form-folds or folded edges on the plaits at said openings, which edges are not harsh to the breast, while either facing may be opened out and assist in covering the breast in use should the relative plait be insufficient for said purpose.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
1. A gown, provided witha nursing-opening, a plait on the portion of the material of the gown over said opening, covering the same, and a laterally-turned fold continuous of the outer wall of said plait.
2. A gown provided with a nursing-opening, a plait on the portion of the material of the gown over said opening covering the same, and an extensible fold on the outer wall of said plait.
