WALL COMPARTMENT FOR GARMENT BAGS Filed Dec. :50, 1955 Tic'l- INVENTOR. 5/11 1. fiMHRA S ATTORNEY WALL QQMPARTMENT FDR GARMENT BAGS Saul H. Marks, rooklyn, N. Y., assignor to Phoenix Closet Accessories, Inc., New York, N. 1 a corporation of New Jersey Application December 30, 1955, Serial No. 556,728
6 Claims. (Cl. 206-10) This invention relates to garment bags for use in protecting clothing to be hung in a closet or other storage. More particularly, the invention deals with the PIOVlSlCl'l of a wall compartment upon the upper front wall of a bag of the type and kind under consideration with a longitudinally disposed separable fastener extending from one side wall to the opposed side wall of the garment bag to control access to the compartment.
Still more particularly, the invention deals with a compartment of the character described, which is primarily formed from a single oblong rectangular sheet of transparent plastics or other material which forms an extension to the front wall, as well as a window front for viewing the contents of the container.
The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in WhlCl'l, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:
Fig. l is a partial perspective view of the top front portion of the open garment bag, diagrammatically illustrating the closure fasteners employed.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail view on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of part of a compartment forming Wall sheet which I employ.
In Fig. l of the drawing, I have indicated at 14? the front, upper portion of a garment bag, 11 represent ng part of the top wall, 12 the normal front wall WhlCh extends to a position short of the front edge 13 of the top wall 11. At 14 I have indicated one of the side walls.
The front wall 12 has, vertically arranged thereon, a long separable fastener, diagrammatically seen at 15, to control access to the interior of the bag in hanging and removing garments therefrom. The short front wall forms, between the upper edge 12 of the front Wall, as noted in Fig. 2 of the drawing and the top wall 11, an opening 16. This opening is closed by a supplemental front wall 17, which constitutes one wall part of a compartment forming strip or sheet 18, shown, in part in perspective, in Fig. 3 of the drawing. This strip or sheet is formed of plastic or other transparent material, the sheet being folded, as indicated at 19, to form a front window wall portion of a resulting compartment 21 to be formed at the opening 16. The wall 20 terminates short of the upper edge of the wall 17, as clearly noted in Figs. 2 and 3 and attached to the upper edge portion of the wall 20 and another supplemental front wall portion 22 is a longitudinally disposed separable fastener 23, which is diagrammatically illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
The separable fastener 23 extends from one side to the other side of the bag, thus forming a substantially complete opening 24, giving access to the compartment 21. It will be noted, from a consideration of Fig. 3 of the drawing, that the upper portion of the wall 17 has a plurality of longitudinally spaced apertures 25,
atent ice so that vapors from mothproofing chemicals that are disposed in the compartment 21 can extend into the interior of the bag. The chemicals in the form of crystals or the like can be viewed through the window wall 20 so that, at all times, the presence of the crystals or other particles can be noted by the user of the bag.
One of the distinctive features of the compartment construction resides in the simplicity of assemblage with the bag to minimize the cost. It will be apparent, from a consideration of Fig. 1 of the drawing, that the side edges of the sheet 18 are secured in position by the front side finishing strips 26 when they are stitched in position; whereas, the upper edge of the wall 17 is simply positioned within the top finishing strip 27 when this finishing strip is stitched to the top wall 11 and the supplemental top wall 22, the latter being preferably composed of the same type of material as employed in the remainder of the wall structures of the bag. In like manner, a finishing strip 28 is stitched to the folded portion 19 of the sheet 18 and the upper edge of the front wall 12 in a single stitching.
In attaching the separable fastener 23, two finishing strips 29 are stitched by double stitchings 30, note Fig. 2, to the tapes of the separable fasteners and to adjacent edge portions of the walls 20 and 22, this double stitching reinforcing the compartment structure to compensate for the stress or strain in operation of the fastener 23.
With a compartment structure of the character de scribed, it will be apparent that placement and replacement of the moth attaching crystals or other articles can be quickly and easily accomplished and the elongated window panel 20, will at all times, keep the user of the garment bag advised as to the need for replacement or renewal of these elements.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
