SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 660,421, dated october 23, 1900. Application filed May 3,1900. Serial No.` 15,400. (No inodel.)

Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. FLANIGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leighton, in the county of Colbert and State of Alabama, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Sliding-Jaw Wrenches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to sliding jaw wrenches.

The object of the invention is to improve the construction shown and described in Letters Patent No. 639,369, granted to me December 19, 1899, whereby I am enabled to secure an additional and finer adjustment.

With this object in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully set forth.v

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench, showing the movable jaw locked. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the movable jaw unlocked. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line ce c of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on line y y of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view on line z z of Fig. l. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the locking cam for the movable jaw. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal sectional vieW through the wrench, and Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of the supplemental jaw.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the shank of the Wrench, having at one end fixed jaws a and b and at the other end a handle 3. The jaw 4 is rigidly connected to and preferably formed integral with a sliding yoke or collar 5 by arms 6 6.

7 denotes a locking-cam journaled between the jaw 4 and its yoke or collar 5 and is provided with teeth 8, which are adapted to engage corresponding teeth 9, formed on one of the sides of the shank 1, and lock the sliding jaw in its adjusted relation to the collar or yoke. The cam is provided with a ixed operating handle 9, by means of which the teeth of the cam may be thrown into and out of engagement with the teeth of the shank. The cam is held in either position by a spring 10.

The parts just described operate in substantially the sameV manner as the corresponding parts in the patent referred to, and a further description is not thought to be necessary.

' Whilea Wrench thusconstructed will meet the general demands of a mechanic, there are occasions when a fine adjustment of the jawsis desired, and, in fact, is necessary, and to this end I have provided the sliding jaw with an auxiliary jaw c, designed to coact with the fixed jaw b. This jaw has a sliding engagement upon the jaw 4 and is actuated by a screw d, which in turn is actuated by a nut e. After the jaw 4 has been bodily moved to secure the approximate adjustment and has been locked in place by the cam 7 the nut e is worked in the proper direction to advance the supplemental jaw c toward the jaw b, thus securing a finer adjustment than could be obtained by the locking-cam.

For general purposes the jaws a and 4 of the wrench will answer; but Where it is desired to get a fine adjustment the jaws h and c will be found very effective.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

jaw, said means also serving to lock the supplemental jaw irl' its advanced or retracted position of adjustment independent of the locking means of said sliding jaw, substantially as set forth.

2. In a wrench, the combination, with a shank having two fixed jaws at its outer end, of a sliding jaw movable upon said shank and adapted to coact with one of the xed jaws, means for locking the sliding jaw in adjustment, a supplemental jaw carried by the sliding jaw and coperating with the other fixed jaw, a screw applied tothe snpplemental jaw, and a nut upon thescrew for adjusting said jaw independent of the sliding jaw and serving to hold said supplemental jaw in its advanced or retractedposition of adjustm ent independent of the locking means of the sliding jaw, substantially as set forth.

In a wrench, the combination with a shank having two fixed jaws at its oiite'r end, of a yoke or collar slidably mounted on the shank and carrying at one side a main jaw cooperating with one of said fixed j aws',means for locking the yoke and main jaw in adjusted position, a supplemental jaw slidablyr mounted upon the inner face of the main jaw on the opposite side of the yoke and coperating with the other fixed jaw, a screw mounted in the yoke and carrying the supplemental jaw, and an adjusting-nut on said screw, substantially as set forth.
