WRBNGE- Patented DemlZ',v 1882.

0%? @mma UNITED STATES v PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN LEE, OF MANSFIELD, ASSIGNOR TO THE RUSSELL WRENCH AND NOVELTY COMPANY, OF RUSSELL, OHIO. Y
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,073, dated December 12, 1882.
Application tiled October 18, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mansfield, in
view of the same.
' all the iigures.
This invention relates to that class of wrenches which are provided with'aslidingjaw; and myinvention consists in certain improved means for securing the said slidingjaw in any position to which it may be adjusted, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the shank of my improved wrench, hav- 4ing a suitable handle, B, and provided at its upper end with a fixed jaw, G.
D is the movable or sliding jaw, which is provided with a longitudinal opening, E, by which it is mounted upon the stem orshank `A. The latter is provided on one side with teeth or transverse corrugations F, engaging similar teeth, G, on one side of the opening E. At the opposite side of said opening E is a recess, H, formed in the body of the jaw I),
and beveled, as shown, so `as to accommodate a wedge, I. The lower end of the jaw D has a screw-threaded opening, J, communicating with the recess H, and in which works a screw,
, K, provided at its lower end with a milled handle, L, by means of which it may be convenientlyoperated. The upper (or inner) end of the screw K has an annular groove, M, to receive a pair of claws, N, formed at the lower end of the wedge I.
O is a coiled spring, arranged upon the screw K, and interposed between the lower end of jaw D and the handle L, which latter is provided with an annular recess, P, in which -the said spring is partly accommodated. The spring O forms an elastic washer `by which any slack caused by wear upon the screw K is taken up, and rattling prevented. I also provide the handle L with a laterally-projecting thumb-piece, Q, forming a lever by which it may be readily operated, and which serves to prevent it from making more than about one` half revolution, which is sufficient to manipulate the wedge.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood. B y manipulating -the screw the wedge may-be lowered, so as to permit thejaw D'to be movedi upon the stem A, or forced upwardly, so as to clamp thejaw upon the stem and hold it securely in any position to 'which it may be adjusted.- The teeth F and G engaging each other, as shown, absolutely prevent the jaw from moving upon the stem when the wedge has been tightened.
This inventionis applicable to all wrenches having sliding jaws without regard to the construction ot' said jaws.
I claim as my invent-ionl. In a wrench, the combination, with the stem or shank having a fixed jaw, ot1 the sliding jaw D, having beveled recess H, and screw 'K, provided with handle L and annular groove M, and the wedge I, having claws N, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a wrenchth,e` combination, with the sliding jaw D,having beveled recess H, `of the wedge I, having claws N, the screw K, having annular groove M and handle L, provided with thumb-piece Q and recess P, and the spring O, as and for theipurpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
` JOHN LEE.
