To all whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, S. D. RADER, of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brick- Kilns; and I hereby declare that the following is a true, full, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, which make a part of this specification, Figure l gives a perspective view of my kiln with furnaces attached. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the furnace inverted.
My kiln is built in the common way, with a series of openings extending laterally through the kiln at its bottom. These openings, in ordinary kilns, are used as furnaces for receiving the fuel and generating the heat by which the mass of brick above are to be burned to the proper degree of hardness. As it is impossible by this mode of building kilns to diffuse the heat equally throughout every portion of the mass, the consequence will be that some of the brick will be burned too much, while another portion will be burned too little. To avoid this I construct the two furnaces B B, one on each of the opposite sides of kilns A. These furnaces are designed to extend about eight feet beyond the ends of the kiln, the additional eight feet being grated, as seen in Fig. 3, and intended for receiving the fuel for heating the furnace B B. Each of the furnaces has a seseries of openings, d, on both sides, corresponding in position with the4 openings in the kiln, but less in size. The object of openings d is to introduce currents of air and drive the flame and heat into the openings under the kiln. The ends of furnaces B are furnished with doors S, which can be closed after the ire is kindled in the furnaces, as the openings d will supply air to maintain combustion. Midway of furnaces B, and at right angles 'with them, are the short furnaces C, which are similarly constructed with B, and designed to increase the volume of heated air introduced beneath the kilns A.
The advantages which. I claim for my mode of construction are i`n the saving of time and the still greater saving of fuel.
I also claim the advantage of equalizing the heat throughout the kiln, and thereby producing brick of uniform hardness, and superior in quality t0 those burned in the Ordin ary manner.
It will be observed that my mode of constructing kilns can be adapted in burning tiles, or for any other purpose to which the common kilns can be applied.
