Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
THOMAS J. JONES, OF SORANTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUDDLlNG-FURNACE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. |74.3711, dated February 11, 1868.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS J. JoNEs, of Scranton, in the county of Luzerne, and in The State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puddling- Furnace; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accom panying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure l, Sheet No.1,represcntsaperspective view of one of the boshes attached to the brick. Fig. 2, Sheet No. 2, represents a plan View of a furnace, showing the boshes arranged on the top ofthe same. Fig. 3, Sheet No. 2, represents a longitudinal vertical section taken through the center of the furnace shown in Fig. 2, Sheet 2.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, B represents the arched brick-work of the top of a paddling or heating furnace. The bricks are so formed on their upper sides or ends, which form the upper surface, that a bosh, A, may be cast upon and be retained by them, and be made thus to form a portion of the top of the furnace. Holes are made in the ends of this bosh, as seen at O and D, for the admission and escape of water, one hole being made a little lower than the other.
By this arrangement the top of a furnace is so formed that a constant stream of water may be passed over it for the purpose of keeping it cool and preventing the heat froln'meltin g and burning down thel bricks which compose its top.
My improvement is fully shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of Sheet No. 2 of the annexed drawings, A representing an ordinarily-constructed furnace, with a smoke-stack, A", and with the brick top C C O, upon and into which are cast the boshes B B B.
represents the ingress-pipe for water into bosh 13. y y are equalizingpipes, and z is the egress-pipe or overflow.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the brick and bosh, as herein described, and used with a furnace, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of October, 1867.
THOMAS J. JONES.
