Description
@mungitura atmt @ffice GERGE NI-MMO, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY. Letters Patent No. 65,110, dated llay 28, 1867.
@te .tlgtxrl referat tu in tigen: tcttctt 33am mit marking ruft nf its anni.
` TO ALL WIIOM I'I HAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, GEORGE NIMMO, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented and made a certain new and useful Improvement in Furnaces for Heating and Welding; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact 4description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figurel is an elevation of said furnace.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section and Figure 3 is a plan of the same sectionally, at the line x n; of fig. 1.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
Furnaces for heating and Welding by the saine lire have been constructed before, as may be seen by referencelto Letters Patent granted to Gr. Nimmo and R. S. Stanton, June 14, 1864. In this, however, a separate chamber is provided, adjacent to the re, for heating the metal to a welding heat, and another one, further olf, for heating purposes. I have constructed my furnace with a View to economizinl heat, by bringing the heatingchamhcr nearer to the re, and providing an opening or openings into the furnace at'the end of the fireehamber, so as 'to employ the direct action ofthe fire upon the articles to be welded, which are introduced upon or within the incandescent fuel.
In thedrawing, a is the lire-chamber, and b the heating-chamberg c is the escape flue to a chimney of anyV desired character. The walls of the furnace are properly built and sustained with plates and buckstaves with tie-bolts, and ythe hearth and crown, as well as the entire interior portions, are lined with fire-brick. The end Wall of the furnace is provided with an opening, nl, for the introduction of fuel, and the side wall has the openings e c, to give access to the heating-chamber 6, and to these, slidesror doors are to he provided. I form an opening in the wall at the end of the furnace, as at f, through which articles to be Welded are inserted amongst the incandescent fuel, or-over the same. Bythis construction the fuel is economized, because the articles to be welded, coming into contact with the fuel, are heated much more rapidly than they would be bythe fiame alone, and the articles to be heated, for rollin` or otherwise Working, which are placed ou the hearth of the chamber b, are more rapidly heated, because they are much nearer the fire. The tuyerc 7L, supplying air to the fire, is introduced through the end wall; and the cindcrs and refuse from the fuel are removed, when necessary, through a holemade in thevbrick-work. A door maybe put in the end Wall, at the opposite end of the heating-chamber to the fire, if desired, so as to give greater access to that heating-chamber, for allowingthe introduction of longer articles.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is y The Welding and heating-furnace, formed with the heating-chamber lire and Weldingfchambcr a, and openings d, e e, land f, inthe manner and for the purposes set forth.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature lthis 187th day of October, A. D. 1866./
encuen NIMMo.
