UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MILES KEHOE AND ANTHONY ZILKER, OF NFRV ALBANY, INDIANA.
BRICK-KILN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 366,402 dated July 12, 1887.
Application filed October 15, 1886. Serial No. 216,335.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, MILES KEHOE and ANTHONY ZILKER, both of New Albany, in the county of Floyd, and in the State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Furnace for Burning Bricks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of our invention is to provide a new and improved furnace for burning bricks, which furnace prevents loss of heat and burns the bricks very quickly and effectively.
The invention consists of various parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, andthen pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar. letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional plan view of our in1- provement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same on the line a: at of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same, parts being in section.
The furnace A is provided with side walls, B, and end walls, B, which inclose the bricks C, resting on the bed or base D, provided with a number of apertures, E, which lead into the chambers F, arranged below the said base D and provided with the fire-places G, carrying the grate-bars H,upon which open the doors I.
Adamper, K, is placed over each of the apertures E in the base D, and is provided with a guide-arm, L, passing through a keeper secured to the base D, so as to permit of sliding the dampers K over the said apertures E. The chambers F are preferably arranged as shown in the drawings, one being placed in front of the other on the sides of the fa rnaoe, and being .the furnace A.
eyes N in the side walls.
(No model.)
divided one from the other by partitions M. The chambers F are fired from the ends B of Theside walls, B, of the furnace are provided with eyes or ducts N, which are in line with the apertures E.
The bricks O are set up within the walls B and B in the usual manner, so as to form the arches 0 over the apertures E. When the bricks are set up, then tires are started on the grates H and the heat passes from the receiving-chambers F through the apertures E into the arches O and through the bricks O, in the usual manner. The amount of heat passing into the arches 0 will be regulated by moving the dampers K over the apertures E by means of hooks or other tools passed into the arches 0 from the outside through the ducts or eyes Nin the side walls, B.
The progress in burning the bricks can be observed at any time through the ducts or Preferably the kiln will be so arranged that the base I) will be level with the ground.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent In a briek-kiln,the combination of the walls B B, the walls B being provided with the apertures N, the base D, provided with the apertures E, the valves K, the chambers F, and fire-places G, the said chambers and fire-places being arranged directly beneath the base, substantially as herein shown and described.
MILES KEHOE. ANTHONY ZILKER.
