Description
@uiten-giants @anni @Hire ORLANDO V. FLORAgOF .MADISON INDIANA, ASSIGNOR- TO HIMSELF AND WILLIAM A. COLLINS, OF THE SAME IJLAGE.
Letters Patent No. 65,898, dated vJ'nrbe 1S, 1867.
IMPROVED VISE.
-TO ALL WHOM I'IIBIAYA CONCERN:
Beit 4known-that I, ORLANDO V. FLORA, -of Madison, in the county of Jefferson, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and improved Adjustable Parallel Vise; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,'which will enable others `'skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being hadito the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved vise.-
Figure 2'is a detail sectional view taken through the line z az, fig. 1.
Figure 3 is aJ detail view showing the manner in .which the front jaw is pivoted to the sliding-bar.
Figure 4: is a detail sectional view taken through the line yy, fig. 3.
" Similar letters of referenceindicate like parts.
l My invention has for its object to furnish an improved vise which can-be readily and quickly adjusted to the size of the object to be liel'dyand which will adjust itself to the shape of the objectL to be hchl,'whether its sides be parallel or inclined 'and it consists in the construction of the rear jaw, in the combination and arrangement of the partsfbywhich the frontjaw is pivoted to the sliding-bar, and in the combination of the sliding-bar, support, and jaws of the vi`sc3`thewl1ole being constructed and arranged, as hereinafter more fully described` v A is the benchfto which `the vise is attached. is the support, which is screwed fast to the bench A, and
Awhich is slotted vertically for the reception of the sliding-bar C and o fthe tenon or tongue formed upon the -lower part of the rearjaw ,The sliding-bar C is formed with flanges upon its upper and lower edges, fitting into grooves formed in the support B, so as to compel the said bar to move back and forth in astraight line;
' and it has ratchet-teeth formedupon its upper edge for thc lower end of the rearjawD to take hold of tohold thcparts of thc vise in place while clamping'the object to beheld. E is a spring, one end ofwhich is attached to the lower end of the rear jaw D,and the free endy of which rests upon the upper edge of the sliding-bnr C. The spring E, as soon as the pressure upon thc-jaws is removed, lifts the lower end of the rear jaw D awayifrom the teeth of the sliding-bar C,- and allows the said bar to be moved freely ont 4and in.V The forward end of the sliding-bar C is enlarged, as shown in fig. 3, and has a vertical hole formed through it for the 'reception of the pivoting pin of the nut F, to the lower end of which is pivoted the lower end of the' front jaw G, as shown in figs. 1 and 3. H is the screw, by means of which the object to be he/ld "is clamped between the jaws Dl and G. The screw H passes through a hole in the body of* the front jaw G, and screws into the nut F, the head of the screw pressing against the side, of the jaw'G. I is a'sprin'g, oneend of which is attached to the inner side of the jaw G, and the other end presses against the forward end of the sliding-bar C tov throw the said jaw G back whenever released from the action of the screw H. .I is a'k'ey, placed between the pivoting pin of the nut F and the'hottom of a notch formed in the end of the sliding-bar C, as. shown in 3. In the sidey of the said pivoting pin, which is 'directly opposite the end iof the -said sliding-bar when the jaws of the vise are parallel with each other, is'formed a notch into which the key .Inlay be forced to securethejaw G in that position, and by driving the key back the jaw will be again free to adjust itself to the form of the object to be held. By this construction and arrangement of the parts the screw H may be made short, as'but'one o r two turns of said screw will ever be required to clamp the object to. be held.
In using the machine the jaw G and sliding-bar C are drawn out, the object to be hold is placed between thejaws, and the sliding-bar C andjaw G pushed back until therjaw G comes in eontactjvith and adjusts itself to the object to be held. One or two turns of the'screw H will then clam'p it securely in place;
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The rear jaw D, constructed substantially as herein shown and described, in combination with the supiport B and sliding-bar C, as and `for the purpose set forth.
2. The Afront jaw G, piro/ted at its lower end to the lower end of the vertical pinibearing the nut F, and fitting in the vertical hole of the sliding-bar C, as herein set forth for the purpose specified.
l 3. VThe combination and arrangement of the frontjaw G, short ,screw H, nut F, and sliding-bar C, with each other, substantially as herein shown anddescribed and for the purpose set forth.
4. Thel combination ofv the key .I with the end of the sliding-bar C, and with the pivoting pin ot" the nut F, substantially as herein shown and described, A.and for the purpose set forth. l y 5. The combina-tion of" the support B, sliding-bar C, and jaws D and G, with each other, substantially as herein shown and described 'and for the purposeset forth.
' ORLANDO V. FLORA.
