WILLIAM A. WEBER," OF WAPAKONETA, OHIO.
HORSESHOE TOE-CALK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 658,884, dated October 2, 1900. Application filed March 31. 1900. $erial No. 11.007. (N model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. WEBER, a resident of Wapakoneta, in the county of Auglaize and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoe Toe-Calks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in horseshoe toe-calks, the object of the invention being to provide an article of the abovementioned character which can be readily secured to a shoe and which when so secured cannot work loose or become disengaged from the shoe.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the toe-calk secured to a shoe. Fig. 2 is a view in section of the same. Fig. 3 is a view in sect-ion, taken at right angles to Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view ofthe calk detached.
A represents a horseshoe of ordinary construction, and B my improved toe-calk secured thereto. The toe-calk B comprises a rolled bar of metal, preferably steel, havind a sharp bearing edge 1, sloping or inclineg sides 2, and a horizontal flat face 3, adapted to be welded to the shoe. The rear edge of the calk is made with a beveled or inclined flange or lip 4 to give a larger surface in contact With the shoe, to offer a larger weldingsurface to the calk without materially increasing the size or weight thereof, and at the same time to more readily take up the heat in the operation of welding, thus saving time and expense.
The calk B is provided on its horizontal or flat upper face with an upwardly-projecting lug 5, having two sides flattened and parallel, as shown at 6, and the other two sides curved or circular, and tapering near its end, where it is made blunt.
In welding the calk thus described to the shoe it is only necessary to heat the shoe, set the calk in position, and drive it in place. The lug will enter the heated iron of the shoe without previously making a notch therein,
and its form will prevent pivotal movement and secure the calk to the shoe, thus greatly adding to the other features of the calk in welding it to the shoe and saving both time and labor.
Various slight changes might be resorted to in the general form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of myinvention, and hence I would have it understood that I do not wish to limitmyself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A horseshoe toe-calk comprising a bar of metal and a lug thereon having two flat parallel sides and a blunt end.
2. A horseshoe toe-calk comprising a bar of metal and lug thereon having two flat parallel sides and two of its sides curved or circular and tapering near its end.
3. A horseshoe toe-calk comprising a bar of metal, a flange or lip along one side thereof and a lug on the upper face of said bar havingtwo sides flat and parallel, and the other two sides curved and tapering near the blunt .end of the lug.
4;. Ahorseshoe toe-calk comprising a bar of metal having a sharp bearing edge and a flat upper face to engage the shoe, a flange on one side of said bar to enlarge the upper face in contact with the shoe, and a lug projecting upward from said flat upper face at one end of the bar and having two flat parallel sides and two curved or circular and tapering near the end.
5. A horseshoe toe-calk comprising a bar of metal, a flange or lip on said calk to increase the flat face against the shoe, an upwardlyprojecting lug on said calk having two flat parallel sides and two curved or circular sides, both sloping or tapering near the blunt end, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' WILLIAM A. WEBER.
