CARD-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 658,701, dated September 25, 1900.
Application fil d December 20, 1899. Serial No. 740,955. (No model.)
T0 (tZZ whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TALTER S. CONGDON, a citizen of the-United States, residing at New Bedford, county of Bristol, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Card-Holders, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to card-holders; and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character which can be readily and quickly mounted upon a tray or like support and which is constructed to receive one or more cards and which is adjustable to fit trays or other supports of diiferent thicknesses and to receive cards of varying sizes, and the article is strong and positively holds a card or cards against displacement.
In the drawings, showing the device in a simple embodiment thereof, Figure 1 is a front View. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation, and Fig. 3 a plan view, of the same. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are detail views showing a different form of side piece.
The card-holder is designated in a general way by U, and in the form thereof represented it is in the nature of an open frame comprising the two approximately-parallel vertical side bars or pieces A and 'B and the top and bottom cross-pieces D and E, said cross-pieces being substantially in parallelism and horizontally disposed. The members D and E are each madein two parts, (denoted by 12 and 13 and 12 and 13,) respectively in sliding connection with each other, each part having an eye or loop to receive the complemental part. Each of the eyes or loops is denoted by let.
The article as a whole is preferably made from wire, the side bar A and the parts 12 and 12 being in one piece, while the same applies with respect to the side bar B and the parts 13 and 13'. Therefore the article comprises two main members slidingly connected with each other, and these members have books or equivalent means to receive a card or cards, and by reason of their connection they may be moved toward or from each other to receive cards of different widths.
The side bars A and B atv their upper ends are extended outwardly at right angles thereto, as at 15 and 16, and these extensions are bent upon each other, as at 17 and 18, and merge intothe parts 12 and 13 and form inturned hooks upon the upper inner sides of the holder to receive between them the upper portion ofa card, as 19. (Shown by dotted lines in Figs. 1, 2, and The lower ends of the sides A and B are projected outward at right angles thereto, as shown at 20 and 21, and are afterward bent inward, as at 22 and 23, respectively, in alinement with the bends l7 and 18, respectively, to form hooks to receive the lower end of said card. The outer branches of the hooks 22. and 23 are continued downward, as at 24 and 25, to form portions of the inner jaws of clips, as F and G, the other portions of the inner jaws being denoted by 26 and 27, and said inner jaws are shown as being of substantially U shape, as clearly indicated in Fig. 1. The parts 26 and 27 have at their upper ends the coils 28 and 29, which are adapted to rest against the upper edge of the wall 30 ofa tray, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. These coils 28 and 29 are in the nature of spring connections between the inner and outer jaws of the two clips F and G. The outer jaws are denoted by 31, and the parts 12' and 13 extend inward toward each other from the same. The coils 28 and 29, which unite the respective branches of the holding-clips, permit the article to be firmly clamped or sustained upon the wall of a tray or like object, and not only this, but the jaws can be moved toward or from each other within limits by stretching the spring without affecting the efliciency of said clips.
The card 19 (shown by dotted lines) is adapted to be held between the hooks 17 and 18 and 22 and 23 and rests upon the coils 28 and 29, which thereby secure it against falling into the tray.
In Figs. 4:, 5, and 6 I have shown a modified form of the device and have illustrated only one of its side bars, the same being denoted by A. This side bar has at difierent points in its height the inturned superposed books 35 and 36,cooperating with similar hooks upon the com plemental side bar. (Not shown.) It is further equipped with a second pair of hooks, as at 37 and 38, upon the opposite side thereof, cooperatin g with like hooks upon said other side bar. In this way the card-holder is furnished with two series of hooks, each series being adapted to hold a card. In Fig. 6 I have shown the side bar A as having a deflected angularly-disposed portion 29 near its lower end. The purpose of this is to bring the card in such position that it may be sustained by the coil at the lower end of said side bar when the latter is of a different construe: t-ion from that previously described, and in practice both side bars will be preferably so made. With these exceptions the modified form of the article partially illustrated in Figs. 4, 5, and 6 is the same as that shown in the other views.
Having described my invention, what I claim,,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A card-holder including a plurality of wire side pieces having hooks at the upper ends thereof, the wire being extended inward from the hooks and each inwardly-extended portion having an eye to receive the other inwardly-extended portion, and said side pieces having hooks near the lowerend thereof, the wire of each side piece being projected downward and then upward below said hooks to form outer jaws of clamping devices, inner jaws, coiled springs uniting the jaws of the respective clamping devices, and inwardlyextending projections at the lower ends of the inner jaws, each having a loop to receive the other projection.
2. A card-holder including a plurality of wire side pieces, each side piece having a plurality of oppositely-facing hooks, the wire being extended inward from the upper hooks and each inwardly-extended portion having an eye to receive the other inwardlyextended portion, and said side pieces having deflected portions near their lower ends, and the wire of each side piece being projected downwardly and then upwardly below the lower hooks to form outer jaws of clamping devices, inner jaws, coiled springs uniting the jaws of the respective clamping devices, and inwardly-extended projections at the lower ends of the inner jaws each having aloop to receive the other projection.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
