CALENDAR-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 658.510, dated. September 25, 1900. Application filed N0ven1ber18, 1899- Serial No. 737.413- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, WINFIELD S. RUSSELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York ancLState of New York, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Oalendar-Holders, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to calendar-holders, and has for one object to provide a simple, cheap, readily-constructed, and efiective device by means of which a calendar of that type which embodies a plurality of loose sheets may be held with the sheets in proper consecutive relation, but freely movable thereon, whereby each sheet may be turned over as fast as used, a secondary object of the invention being to provide such a device as will occupy but little space, whereby the calendar and holder may be conveniently carried or sent through the mails, and a tertiary object of the invention being to provide an attach-. ment or shield to conceal the contents or face of the calendar, particularly when it isa memorandum-calendar.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a plan view of a calendar provided with a holder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, shown in vertical position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the calendar-holder disconnected from the calendar, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the detachable shield forming part of the invention.
In the practice of my invention I construct from a single strip or rod of wire two parallel yokes A, which yokes, considering the calendar to be in the horizontal position shown in Fig. 1, will range vertically with their curved or rounded portions ct above the surface of the calendar or paper sheets B, which are provided with registering-apertures b at either side thereof near the upper edge to receive therethrough the arms A of the yokes, which arms are formed by the free ends of the rod or wire from which the device is constructed. The rear arms A of the yokes A"are at a point parallel with the free ends of the arms A directed inwardly to form short bars or shoulders c, from which they are directed forwardly and outwardly to form diagonal arms d, diverging to approach and approximately meet the free ends of the arms A. These diagonal arms d are connected at their forward ends by an integral cross-bar e, the central portion of which is bent rearwardly to form an W f- The calendar is connected with the holder by inserting the arms A through the apertures Z) of the various sheets after they have been duly arranged in their consecutive or chronological order, this being preferably done in the manufacture or rather assembling of the device, the arms then being brought level of the desk and rest upon theshort bars 0 and adjacent portions of the diagonal arms 01. By reference to the plan view shown in Fig. 1 it will be readily observed that after these sheets or any of them are turned over then if the calendar be lifted by the yokes A the short bars 0 and the diagonal arms 61 will prevent the turned-over sheets from falling down beneath the cardboard strip B. In case the calendar is desired to be hung upon a wall or other vertical surface it may be suspended in the position shown in Fig. 2 by hanging upon a nail through the instrumentality of the eye f, which in this position of the calendar projects upwardly, asbest shown in Fig. 3.
I have also shown in the drawings i-n Figs.
1, 2, and 4 a detachable shield or guard O, which forms part of my invention and possesses material advantages in connection therewith. This shield or guard is formed either of cardboard orany other preferred material and of any suitable length. In. the drawings I have shown it as of equal length with the calendar-sheets B. In either side of the guard or shield 0, near the upper edge thereof, are formed inwardly-ranging slots g, terminating at their inner ends in apertures g, through which pass the arms A. This shield when turned over will form a supplementary base for the turned-overleaves and may by reason of the slots 9' be detached from and reinserted into position upon the arms A,
whereby constantly to conceal the tempora;
rily-uppermost sheet of the calendar, so that any memoranda written upon the same shall not be visible. The advantage of this device will be manifest.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A calendar-holder, constructed of a single piece or rod of wire formed into two parallel yokes, the forward arms of which range forwardlyand are adapted to receive the calendar-sheets thereon, the said wire or rod being projected inwardly from the lower ends of the rear-arms of the yokes to form shoulders and being then projected forwardly to form diagonal arms meeting the forward arms of the yokes and being connected together therebetween.
2. The combination with a calendar-holder which comprises resilient arms or members, a plurality of calendar-sheets connected therewith; of a removable guard or shield provided with notchesin the opposite sides thereof which are adapted to engage the said arms or members and cover the calendar-sheets,
whereby said guard or shield is secured in position, but is movable thereon and detachable therefrom.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 15th day of November, 1899.
WINFIELD S. RUSSELL.
