UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM G. HARLOW, OF YAZOO CITY, MISSISSIPPI.
G RATE-FRAM E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 657,239, dated September 4:, 1900.
Application filed June 26, 1900- To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. HARLOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yazoo City, in the county of Yazoo and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grate-Frames, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in grate-frames, the construction and advantages of which will behereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a fireplace, showing the grate-frame and its attendant parts in position; Fig. 2, a rear elevation of the grate-frame, and Fig. 3 a vertical sectional view on the line as a; of Fig. 2.
The object of my invention is to provide a proper and adjustable support for the tile or similar work now commonly used around grate-frames as a finish intermediate said frame and the mantelpiece.
The invention in the embodiment shown comprises a grate-frame having an adjustable member or support at its upper side, upon which the lower tier of tiles rests.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates the grate frame or casing, which may be of any desired form, that shown being merely illustrative. Extending out rearwardly from said frame are two lugs a, preferably formed integral with said frame and through smooth openings formed therein work threaded stems or legs (Z. Mounted upon said stems d are adjusting-nuts b, which rest and bear upon the upper face of the lugs, as is clearly indi cated in Figs. 2 and 3. By means of these nuts the stems may be raised or lowered as required and a table or support 6, mounted upon and carried by said stems, likewise raised orlowered. Said table or support consists of along bar, which, as will be noted upon reference to Fig. 3, works up close against the inner face of the grate-frame A,so that it forms a proper and adequate support for the lower tier of tiles, which bears against Serial No. 21,675. (No model.)
the inner face of the grate-frame, as is best indicated in Fig. 3.
By turning the nutsb the shoulder or support may be raised or lowered as required to meet the conditions of any particular case. So, too, should the grate-frame settle the table or support 6 may be elevated to compensate therefor, and thus form a proper sup port for the lower tier of tiles, which in turn of course supports those above.
lVhile I have described the lugs a as being made integral, it is manifest that the invention may be applied to any of the ordinary grate frames or casings now in use. The invention is also susceptible of various modifications in the way of adjusting the shoulder or support, and I do not desire to be understood as restricting myself to the particular embodiment herein set forth. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is' 1. A grate frame orcasingprovided with an adjustable tile-support.
2. In combination with a grate frame or casing, a tile-support at or near its upper end, and means for Varying the vertical position of said support.
3. In combination with a grate frame or casing, a tile-support located at or near the upper end thereof upon its inner face, and means connected to said frame or casing for raising and lowering said support.
4:. In combination with a grate frame or casing, a support '2 extending across the inner face thereof near its upper end, lugs extend ing inwardly from said face, and adjustable connections intermediate said lugs and the support.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM G. I-IARLOWV.
