ROBERT CARSON, OF ETNA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO VILLIAM WILSON, OF SHARPSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
CUSPIDOR.
SPECIFICATION forming pert'ef Lettere Patent Ne. 656,939, daten August 2e, 190e. Application filed February 5, 1900l Serial No. 4,040. (No model.)
To all tf1/"tom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT CARSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Etna, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ouspidors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cuspidors, and more particularly to that special class that are designed to retain their contents when upset.
One object of the invention is to construct a cuspidorfthat will not spill when upset, irrespective of the angle or degree in which the same may be tilted.
The invention has for its further object to construct a cuspidor of the above-referred-to class that may be easily reversed, the upper and lower portions of the cuspidor each being provided with a bell-shaped opening communicating with a spherical casing, the latter containing a receptacle secured therein in a manner that will prevent the contents from becomingv accident-ally dischargedtherefrom in case the vessel is upset. Y
With Vthe above and other objects in view the invention finally consists in the novel construction, cornbination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved cnspidor. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a side view of the cuspidor when upset, showing in dotted lines the position of the'inner vessel. Fig. 4 is a longitudinalsectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by reference-numerals, l indicates a spherical casing which is preferably formed oftwo hemispherical parts suitably secured together.
The reference-numeral 2 indicates an upper bell-shaped mouth communicating with the casing 1 and having an opening 3 in the lower portion thereof.
The reference-numeral 4 indicates a lower bell-shaped mouth, which likewise communicates with the @asin g 1 and has formed therein au opening 5.
The operation of my improved cuspidor is as follows: By reason of the inner vessel being partially cut away at its upper portion the lower part of the receptacle will be somewhat heavier, together with the contentsl it may contain, and will cause the opening 12 to be in an almost upright position, irrespective of the tilting of the cuspidor. The axis 7 or l0 permits the inner vessel to turn in any direction, and when the cuspidor is reversed lthe opening 12 will correspond with the opening 5. When it is desired to empty the contents of the cuspidor, the inner vessel is held in position by engaging the bottom thereof through the opening 5 of the bell f shaped mouth 4.
The many advantages obtained by the use of my improved cuspidor will be readily ,apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying 'drawings.
It will be noted that various changes may loe-made in the details of construction with-A out departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
1.v In a cuspidor, the combination of an outer casing provided with an upper and lower bell-shaped mouth having openings therein communicating with said casing, an interior ring pivotally secured in said easing, and an will register with the upper or lower bell interior vessel pivotally connected to said shaped month of the outer easing, substanring, all parts being arranged and operating tially as described. substantially as herein shown sind described. In testimony whereof I aix my signature 5 2. In :L euspidor, the combination of an inthe presence of two witnesses.
outer easing, an inner casing having an open- K ing secured therein, in upper and lower beii- ROBERT CARSON shaped month Communicating with said eas- Witnesses: ing, and means whereby when said euspidor JOHN NOLAND, ro is reversed Jche opening of the inner easing VILLIAM E. MINOR.
