Be it known that I, MARVIN CAMPBELL, of South Bend, Indiana, have invented'certain new and useful Improvements in Gurry' combs, of which the following is a specification. V

This invention relates to improvements in currycombs, and refers more specifically to improvements on the type of currycombs set forth in a prior patent granted to me, No. 629,768, dated August 1, 1899.

- Among the salient objects of the present invention are to provide an improved back or support for the coils of' the brush proper, which is not only of simplified construction, but is also of an improved form which enables the comb to be used more efficiently and conveniently, to so construct and arrange the parts that the comb proper is capable of being reversed, so that the user may have at his option either a plain or toothed comb, to so construct the back of the comb that it may be struck out of sheet metal by means of suitable dies in a most sim'ple'and economical manner, and in general to provide a simplified and improved construction.

To the above ends the invention consists in the matters hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in" the appended claims, and will be readily understood-from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a currycomb embodying my invention. Fig. 2'is a central vertical sectional View taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the device. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the back separated from the other parts, and Fig. 5 is a similar perspective View of the coils secured together ready for application to the back.

Referring to said drawings, 1 designates as a whole a back, which in the embodiment shown herein is of sheet metal, is approximately circular, being, however, provided at" one sidewith a flattened marginal portion 2, (see Fig. 3,) and is provided around its entire periphery with a flange 3, struck up by means of a suitable die, that portion 3 of the flange which extends across the flattened or depth nearly but not quite equal to'the width of the comb blades oncoils 4, while atent No. 655,957, dated August 14, 19cc.

the portion of the flange 3 extending around the remainder of the circumference of the back is made of a width or depth considerably less than the width of the comb-blades,

as indicated clearly in Figs. 1 and 2.

The comb proper consists, as in the said prior patent, of a plurality of coils 4, of sheet metal, formed from asingle continuous length or ribbon, one margin of which is toothed, as indicated at 5, these coils being arranged to successively encircle each other from the smallest coil outwardly in a flat spiral and being all secured together at one side thereof in eccentric relation, as best seen in Fig. 3.

For convenience of construction and assemblin g of the device the several coils of the ribbon are permanently secured together in fixed relation to each other by means of a rivet 6, extending therethrough, so that the comb proper may be removed from the back Without the coils thereof being released, so as to lose its form. The bunch of coils thus secured'together is secured to the wider part of the flange Sdetachably and in such manner-that either edge of the comb-ribbon may be arranged outwardly, the drawings showing the tooth edge thereof as being in operative position. As a convenient construction for thus detachably and reversibly securing the comb-coils to the back I provide bolt-apertures 7, arranged to extend through the several coils at points located at either side of the rivet 6 andintermediate ofthe width of the comb-blades and provide registering apertures 7 in the part 3' of the flange, through which are inserted bolts 8.

In order that the comb may work most efo ficiently, it is necessary that the comb be supported in such manner as to stand free from the main body of the back, so that it will be free to yield and accommodate itself to the contour of the different parts ofthe animal, 5 and I accomplish this result most conveniently by imparting to the portion of the flange 3 from which the comb is supported a pe culiar shape or angle, as best indicated at 9 in Fig. 2, which causes thef-comb to stand at I00 the proper angle with relation to the back when clamped to the flange portion by means of the bolts 8, whether the toothed side he outermost or the reverse side. The strap 10, constituting the loop within which the hand is inserted in using the comb, is suitably secured to the back conveniently by means of rivets 11, substantially as in the construction set forth in my former patent.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a device which is exceedinglysimple and which can therefore be vantages secured by this construction over previous forms are not to be underestimated. By reason of therounded contour of the back the comb is not only rendered much more convenient to handle, but the operative edge thereof, and especially the peripheral portions of the comb, is much more available for operating upon hollows and relatively-inaccessible portions of the animal-as, for exa1nple,beneath the fetlocks,around the hooks, and the like. The peculiarity of construction which enables the comb to be reversed relatively to the back is a feature of importance, for the reason that the operator can convert the comb from a toothed comb to a smooth-edged blade, and this is often an important desideratum, since the horseman frequently finds it desirable to use a toothed comb during certain portions of the season and a smooth comb at other times. The present construction is also more economical to manufacture, not only because ofits greater simplicity, but also because it dispenses with those portions of the back which were practically without utility and were, in fact, a serious objection in the rectangular form heretofore in use.

While I have herein shown what I deem to be a preferred embodiment of the invention 2 e., a construction in which one edge of the ribbon is toothed and the other plain, thus giving the user the option of employing either edge that he finds desirable-yet it is to be understood that either or both edges may be made of modified form without departing from the invention. It is to be further understood also that while I prefer to employ the bolts for detachably securing the comb proper to the back, yet I may, without departing from the invention, employ other wellknown fastening devices. Ido not, therefore, Wish to be limited to the precise details of construction shown, except as they may be made the subject of specific claims.

I claim as my invention- 1. Asa new article of manufacture, a currycomb comprising a group of relatively-eccentric circular comb blades of successivelylarger diameter from the innermost outwardly, secured together at one side, and a back to which the group of comb-blades is secured having'a marginal configuration, substantially conforming to the shape of the The ad outermost comb-blade, substantially as described.

2. Asa new article of manufacture, a currycomb comprising a group of relatively-eccentric circular comb blades of successivelylarger diameter from the innermost outwardly, secured together at one side, and a back to which the group of comb-blades is secured having a marginal configuration, substantially conforming to the shape of the outermost comb-blade, said back being provided with a flange extending entirely around its margin and one part of which serves as the support to which the comb-blades are secured, substantially as described.

3. As a new article of manufacture, a currycomb comprising a group of relatively-eccem tric circular comb blades of successivelylarger diameter from the innermost outwardly, secured together at one side, a sheet metal back having a marginal shape substantially conforming to the outermost combblade, an integral flange portion extending at'an abrupt angle to the plane of the back, and securing devices for detachably securing the group of comb-blades to said flange por tion, said securing devices being located symmetrically with relation to the opposite edges of the comb-blades, whereby the latter may be reversed upon the back, substantially as described.

As a new article of manufacture, a curry comb comprising a group of relatively-eccen tric circular comb blades of successivelylarger diameter from the innermost outwardly, secured together at one side, each blade being provided with a toothed edge and an opposite plain edge, a sheet-metal back shaped to conform substantially to the form of the outermost blade, and provided with an integral flange portion extending at an abrupt angle to the plane of the back, and securing devices for detachably securing the group of comb-blades to said flange portion, said securing devices being located symmetrically with relation to the comb-blades, whereby the latter may be reversed upon the back and the comb-blades being secured to said flange portion in position to stand free from the main body of the back, substantially as described.

5. In a currycomb, the combination of the sheet-metal back 1, provided with the integral circumferential flange 3, the group of comb-blades 4 formed from a continuous strip of ribbon of sheet metal toothed at one edge and plain at the opposite edge, and secured together at one side independently of the back, and the securing bolts 8 extending through the flange and group of comb-blades and arranged symmetrically with relation to the opposite edges of said blades, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
